I feel like they have this takeaway that because their big money signings have been bad, that any big money signing is bad, when the real lesson should be that maybe there's just something wrong with their evaluation process of big money players.

That's not their real takeaway. That's just the usual PR-talk from mid- to small-market teams who need to be creative. As soon as a Friedman left Tampa, he also left his roots behind and started spending like a drunken sailor in LA, because he's not an idiot and knows that you need high end players to win. He actually said that you need to overspent on free agents, because otherwise you'll come in 2nd or 3rd every time and never get anyone. Exactly what the Red Sox have been doing for a few years now, knowing beforehand that this strategy will not get them anyone (of substance).
They haven't even extended Crochet yet. Look up how long it took the Dodgers to extend Glasnow after trading for him last year (not even 72 hours) even after signing Ohtani.

If it was about Cora, Bregman would already be signed for 4-5 weeks. If it was about Breslow, they probably would have signed Fried / Snell instead of giving up prospects for Crochet.

The Red Sox are doing and saying this crap to save face and want fans to buy into it.

Crochet's lack of an extension should really be one of the top subjects right now. Pitchers and catchers report February 12th. If Crochet isn't extended by then, people should be concerned. Maybe not panic level, but the conversation would rightfully start to turn to when do they trade him.
