Whatever Bregman wants no one is biting but he fits now at 2B till can move Yoshida and open up DH for Devers and 2B for Campbell

Right now

Duran LF
Hamilton 2B
Devers 3B
Casas 1B
Yoshida DH
Story SS
Abreu RF
Wong C
Rafaela CF

Refsnyder LF
Grissom 2B
Navareau C

Campbell 2B
Anthony RF
Mayer SS

My wish lineup

Duran LF
Bregman 3B
Devers DH
Casas 1B
Campbell 2B
Anthony RF
Story/Mayer SS
Wong C
Rafaella CF

Pass, guy has thrown strikes for like one year in his entire career

Electric stuff but 4 years @ 20 mill per for a one inning erratic guy playing the most volatile position in sports is silliness. I do prefer it to trading for a high end reliever tho
Good news on Whitlock

Healthy (huge if) this guy could be a monster closer - definitely one inning and watch how often but when he is on he’s really good

It’s crazy they could add Bregman and be the favorites to win the division-certainly 90 win team on paper

FWIW Kiley McDaniel in his espn+ article about best moves so far has the Crochet trade and Buehler signing as 2 of his 4 best moves

Thinks Buehler is a #3 and thinks the Sox package for Crochet doesn’t include any future stars while he considers Crochet to be a cost controlled star who is “ace or ace-adjacent”

His least fav is Montas-Mets, Nate-Texas, and Cobb-Tigers
The bolded gave me long pause, some names/teams just go together.

We shouldn't have to worry about this as Red Sox fans, but since we do...

What's the point of bringing in an aging, declining, possibly already replacement-level Arenado if you still have to eat Yoshida's money? NA is gonna be in his year 34 season and last year his OPS+ was 101. The year before it was 108.

Since they're operating with a bullshit internal budget the defensive upgrade simply isn't worth it to me. They'll use his deal and the money they paid to unload Yoshida as a reason not to improve the team in a meaningful way, all while Arenado is getting worse as a player.

I think Bregman is a " must have" for us.
We need his RH bat in the lineup.
I liked Hamilton at 2B for us last year. He gave us much needed speed at the bottom of the lineup along with CR, it will be his job to lose this year.

I’d eat half of Yoshida’s contract and all of Arenado’s to make that deal. And then I DH Devers full time
It might take us adding another piece ( prospect) to get Arenado in a trade with Yoshi.
We are still very deep at SS prospects with Mayer / Arias / Cespedes and Romero
I would have no issues adding Romero into the deal.

I prefer Bregman as a player to Arenado by a wide margin but I’ll take the league average RHB with good defense at 3B if it means we can move Devers to DH and get Yoshida off the roster. I like Yoshida as a hitter but he’s just an awful roster fit right now

pretty big groundball rotation, having a + defender at 3B/SS and a solid one at 2B would help a lot

I like this because it does not block Kristian Campbell or Mayer. Still upgrades infield (defense for sure) and not locked into a long term deal. I could live with Bregman if it is a 5 or maybe 6 year deal at most, but I don't expect it to age well outside the first couple of years. I could also see a mini resurgance for either player hitting at fenway.

I think Bregman vs. Arenado is a non-topic. Both are typical "win now" moves. Both have a few years left in the tank, Bregman with a higher ceiling, but also comes with the huge disadvantage due to contract length. And since the red Sox have shown zero aggressiveness and willingness to push for immediate success, neither players makes sense. Bregman would be even worse since in 3-4 years, the Red Sox may feel the need to extend a few of their homegrown players.

The Bregman contract is underwater after year(s) 1-2 of the deal and he wouldn't move the needle enough to put the Sox over the Yankees or Orioles in his supposed prime years.

This would all be a moot point if the owners were serious about this product, but this is not the reality.

It might take us adding another piece ( prospect) to get Arenado in a trade with Yoshi.

These kind of moves are ill advised. A prospect here and a prospect there and suddenly there is no ammo left, even the unsung secondary prospects can make a difference, especially when they are on a stacked farm when they would usually be ranked higher on an average system. Breslow gave up way too much prospect value at last years deadline, let alone in the Crochet-trade. Especially when you are unwilling to invest real money into the roster.

Yup

I actually liked their pitching off season as long as Whitlock & Slaton going to be healthy

Bregman solidifies their D while providing flex at two positions a power bat and leadership

Plus he’s kind of a dink which I can appreciate

I know it’s early and my 12 year old self could have done it easily, but I’m nowhere near as up on MLB as I once was…..

But can someone handicap the AL East Starters for me?

Sincerely just wondering what others think, because I think they’ll Sox look pretty good, but I don’t know for sure what the others have in comparison…at least not past the top 2/3 guys.

Arenado hit over .270 last season. Pretty sure league average was in .250s

He is a ten time gold glove winner as well.
Huge upgrade vs Raffy.
The Sox have yet to address our fielding problems from last year.
1B and 3B need to be upgraded defensively.
Having a healthy Trevor Story will help at SS.
If we start the season with Raffy at 3B ( career .944 fielding pct), yikes.
Bregman is the perfect fit for us if we cannot get Arenado and off load Yoshi in the deal, move Raffy to DH and perhaps part time 1B and fill in for Bregman on his rest days.
Pickup a better defensive 1B than Casas for the bench, a RH hitter so we can sub him in for the later innings, just like the Sox did when we got Mientkiewicz in 2004.

Yankees
Tampa (if healthy)
Boston
Toronto
Baltimore
Toronto is way too high on your list.
They will be lucky to get to .500 next year.
Baltimore needs to be moved up on the list.
Yanks are still the team to beat.
