Almost halfway through the season, what do we think?

The top 3 that come mind for me are Kaprizov, MacKinnon, and Quinn Hughes. Draisaitl is there aswell, and I'm sure I'm leaving out many other candidates.

Just wanted to get this going, what do people think so far?

I don’t think anyone has stood out for their level of play enough to not have importance to team be a factor. I don’t think MacKinnon has been as good this year despite his point lead, though he’s still obviously awesome, as are Kucherov and McDavid. I think Hughes and Kaprizov have been the most valuable this year, though with both now missing games it’s going to hurt them and defensemen don’t win the Hart. I think Draisaitl has been the best forward overall, but it’ll always be tough for him with McDavid on the team. I think it’s wide open tbh, though I bet it comes down the same top 3 from last year plus Draisaitl.

If the trophy truly was awarded to the player most valuable to their team, it would be Hughes. However, it won't be the case and with him missing games it won't help. Without him, vancouver is not even a nhl team

Can someone with Twitter post that recent JFresh tweet showing Vancouver splits with and without Hughes on the ice? It is absolutely wild, they go from contender to lotto team, I've never seen anything like that aside from early McDavid Oilers.

even though he hasnt played in the league yet the anticipation of his imminent arrival to turnaround the Wings is the only thing keeping the team from folding

In terms of pure importance to their team, hard not to go with Hughes. This chart is bananas.

top 5 for me would be
1) MacKinnon
2) Draisaitl
3) Marner
4) Kaprizov
5) Hellebuyck

Kucherov and Q. Hughes would be right there as well to for me

The OP is asking who right now. McDavid would not be in the running as Draisaitl has had the better season so far.

Among forwards:

Mac
Draisaitl
Kucherov/Kaprizov

Mackinnon, Draisaitl, Kaprizov, and Kucherov would be my forward picks.

Helle, Hughes and Makar will get some votes but they'd have to absolutely blow away the forwards to have a realistic shot.

It's Draisaitl IMO. Minus empty net points he has more points than MacKinnon, and is leading the league in goals scored also.

Drai also has 9 GWG which is coming up clutch in big moments of the game.

MacKinnon is running away with it. Makar for what he is doing as a dman, but needs an Art Ross to get the Hart which is a stretch obv.

Draisiatl is doing great, but McDavid imo still is more important to that team given theyre glued together for 80% of their points and any points Drais ets without McDavid on the ice, he is seeing weaker matchups for. Zero chance he gets the Hart without winning the Art Ross in a 15-20 point spread.

KK probably is the most deserving becuause of his lack of support, but hes falling off the pace recently missing games.

Kuch, nah.

Eichel should be 2nd place at this point.

Helleybuyck will get some 5th place votes.

So this is my final guess assuming everyone is healthy.

Mackinnon
Eichel
Kaprisov
Makar
Kucherov

I think it's going to be hard for him to win when McDavid is outpacing him in points per game and will likely finish ahead in the scoring race.
