2025 DRAFT

Two related questions/thoughts: Any chance Roger McQueen drops out of the top ten? (Or another centre) Would any teams in 10-15 range be willing to trade for 18 and 31/32? Pittsburgh? Detroit?

I know historically this organization trades down to accumulate more picks and depth, but our prospect pool is looking decent, I trust the staff to go after late round gems and this may be our best chance at a strong centre prospect.

I wish. But probably no.

We are probably more likely to trade picks for RFA than land a piece like that.

It's hard to say. I'm not sure I see us moving 18 unless it's to move up, the only RFAs I cold see the lames offering up 18 would be Rossi or Dobson. 31/32, I can see a few more guys, but still not many.

One thing that could be to or advantage for trading up, is what NYR decide to do with their first... it's top 13 protected and fell at #12, so they can choose whether the Pens get this years pick or next years... if NYR decides to move next years, I could see them trading down to get 2x 1st this year. because the gap between 12 and 18 isn't particularly large.

Ras could also play a part... I could see picks 9 (BUF), 10 (ANA), 13 (DET), 14 (CBJ) being in trade discussions.

Sounds a lot like Calgary is trying to move up in this draft.
This season, how it went to the last game, culture reset... if Conroy manages to parlay his late picks and a player into a top 5-6 pick... have to consider that an A+ win.

Unless that player is Zary, we probably aren't moving up anywhere close to that range. And moving up 4-5 spots in the draft is only worthwhile if someone we really want starts falling to that 13-14 range (ie Roger McQueen)

In this draft, I’m not sure moving to 5 or 6 is worth it. Unless the cost to move up reflects the weaker class.

That aggressiveness would be much better served in next years class than this one.

Really depends on the cost and who's there at the pick we trade for. If we are trading up for someone like Desnoyers, he is probably a legitimate 1C down the line and arguably worth the price

You know what, the more I think about it, the more I’d potentially be on board if Desnoyers or O’Brien were the pick at 5-7 (and on the cost obviously). I like Cootes and think he has Brayden Point upside as well.

We have lots of depth in our system, and with two 1st next year as well, there is a good opportunity to add higher end quality over the next two drafts.

Moving up into the top 10 this and next year could be a way to do that and get high end talent through the draft despite this teams inability to finish anywhere other than 16th.

Again I think the cost is the breaking point. Utah for example wants a top 6 forward in return for #4, we don't really have a lot of spare top 6 forwards. My guess is they would want both of our picks and Zary at least. Nashville, Philly, and Boston hold spots 5-7. I think the likelihood of those teams moving their pick is borderline zero.

Trading picks on the floor of the 1st round is so rare these days. Other than the Zary pick, I can’t remember a team the last team to be strategic with doing that. And in terms of aggressive moves to trade up, forget it

Just last year several of these trades happened. Wild/Flyers traded picks 13/14/3rd in '25, Habs/Kings traded 21/26/57/198, Ducks/Leafs traded 23/31/58, Mammoth/Avs traded 24/38/71/2nd in '25, Hawks/Canes traded 27/34/50, Oilers/Flyers traded 32/1st in '25

There were no trades in the first round of the 2023 draft, but outside of that year there are usually a at least 2-3 moves. Last year San Jose traded up to 11 the day prior to the draft, and Philly traded up to 12 on the floor. Also the Habs also traded up from 24 to 21, the ducks moved up from 31 to 23, Utah traded up to 24 from the 2nd round, and Chicago traded up to 27 from the 2nd round too. The Oilers also traded their 2025 1st for pick 32.

In 2022 Chicago moved DeBrincat for pick 7, Dach for pick 13 as part of a 3 team deal, and took on Mrazek for pick 25. Utah traded up to 11 from 27, as well as pick 29 for 32.

In 2021 the Seth Jones trade took place resulting in Columbus getting pick 12 and Chicago getting pick 32. Buffalo got 14 for Ristolainen, Detroit traded up to pick 15 for 23, Minnesota moved up from 22 to 20, and Nashville traded a few 2nds for pick 27.
