Prospect Info: 2025 Draft: We are #1….1

See, that is the thing. I don't view 12th overall this year as equal value to unprotected 2026 first next year.

Rust for 12th overall? I would need ++ to get it done. Sorry.
Rust for 2026 unprotected first? I might do it regardless of the team offering it.

I wonder if NYR is thinking along these lines. Instead of looking at the prospects who may or may not be available at 12, look at the value of each pick as things stand right now (or, more specifically, three weeks from now).

If Drury chooses to give up 12th overall and keep his 2026 first, I would offer him Rust for his 2026 first at that point and see if his coach forces him into it.
any way you can get it done, is fine by me.

Smith becomes significantly more attractive to pick at #11 with him transferring to Penn State. My only hesitation with Smith is that the WHL wouldn't be good for his development, but sending him to college solves that issue entirely.

I think he'd jump up to #2 on my wish list after Eklund with him in the NCAA over WHL, speaking in terms of guys who will probably be available at #11.

Apparently there's a report going around that the flyers plan to pick a center with their first this year. I could see Hagens, Desoyners and O'Brien all going between 5-7. Nashville and Boston also seem like teams that will prioritize centers. Would be the most Flyers thing possible for them to pick McQueen at 6 though

They have Desnoyers' brother in their system already, I'd be shocked for them to not take Desnoyers if he was still available at #6.

It's hard to say what order the guys will end up going in, but I think Hagens to Nashville, Desnoyers to Philly and O'Brien to Boston makes a ton of sense for how the draft will go.

Well if Pens get the Rangers pick, a center like Martin, and then Eklund would be a great haul. Prefer O'Brien but correct he has the Boston Bruins looking like he is their man.

From the hop people were comparing Desnoyers to Couturier and I kinda just figured the Flyers were taking him regardless if he ended up available when they picked.

Wheeler dropped his final top-100 here. Top-20 is:

1. Schaefer
2. Misa
3. Hagens
4. Martone
5. Desnoyers
6. Frondell
7. Mrtka
8. Eklund
9. O'Brien
10. Martin
11. McQueen
12. Carbonneau
13. Aitcheson
14. Bear
15. Reschny
16. Potter
17. Smith
18. Lakovic
19. Hensler
20. Reid

Tier 1 is 1 and 2, tier 2 is 3-6, tier 3 is 7-12 and tier 4 is 13-20. 21 and after turns into tier 5 for Wheeler.

Yeah all three years of it.
what is your point relative to the draft?

Do you really think that a team is drafting someone saying

“we will get the exact same career path and injury derailment as Couturier”

or maybe, just maybe.. do you think they mean

“we think he can have a similar impact playing a similar style in a similar role as prime Couturier who was an elite center and Selke winner”

Shero was a rather mixed bag. During his tenure, the Pens did well in terms of quantity, but it's pretty easy to argue that the overall quality wasn't high, outside of a few key players.

2006: 3 out 5 picks went on to have NHL careers of 200+ games; best pick was Staal
2007: 2 out of 8 picks w/200+ games; best pick was Muzzin, though the Pens never signed him.
2008: 0 out of 4; first pick was in the fourth round
2009: 1 out of 7; best pick was Despres
2010: 3 out of 6; best pick was Rust
2011: 3 out of 5; quantity, but not quality, as the three were Harrington, Archibald and Wilson
2012: 5(!) out of 9; best was Maatta, but honorable mentions to Sundqvist and Murray
2013: 2 out of 6; best pick was Guentzel

I once saw a quote from a scout saying that any draft you can get 2 NHL players out of is a good draft, so by that measure, Shero did pretty well.
On the other hand, his first round picks were often questionable, with the team frequently reaching for players that didn't end up living up to where they were picked (particularly in light of players who were drafted after them). On the flip side, Shero's team really shined in the third round in particular, picking up players like Guentzel, Rust, Sundqvist and Murray there.

That said, I'd take Shero's record in the draft over Rutherford's any day.
Shero made the early selections himself and left the rest to his scouts. This record screams to me he had a good scouting staff but didn't have an eye for it himself.

Explain to me in NHL 25 potential terms.
