Prospect Info: 2025 Draft: We are #1….1

Following this guy on Substack. Pretty good prospect reviews.

O’Brien

“He drives play, can control the pace of the game, picks defenses apart with his spatial awareness, and can manufacture open seams by shifting defenses, and drawing pressure. Patient and composed with the puck on his blade, he will hold on to the puck in order to wait for the right play to develop, and can connect on some of the more dynamic feeds across the ice and through traffic, with poise under pressure.

His passes are usually perfectly weighted, and right on the tape of his recipient, coming laced with deception to quash his opponents efforts to stop him. A natural playmaker, he can spot passing seams that few others at his level could, and has the soft hands and skill to transfer the puck over and under sticks, and between feet. He thrives on the powerplay, and quarterbacks the action from the half-wall with effectiveness.”
That YouTube video @Jacob posted throws a wet blanket on this scouting report though with video evidence to back it up. It's always interesting how people come away with varying degrees of differing opinions on players.

Obrien isnt can’t miss but does enough where he’s going high. No shot he gets to 11 imo but maybe I’m wrong.

Am curious what he turns into. I think if I was a betting man Id predict he’s a weakish middle 6 PP merchant in the NHL but I can see the upside for a 2way top 6 C.

For whatever it's worth, the people on the NYR board seem to believe they are going to keep the 12th pick and give us 2026 unprotected first.

Personally, I love it but I remain skeptical that they want to do that. I just feel there is too much that could go wrong if they made that decision. But hey, go for it!

We all know how arrogant the ex-coach is, so maybe they will all be drinking the Kool-Aid over there.

It makes sense even if they are playing with fire.

The belief there has to be that this 12th overall is the worst they are going to do and that Sullivan is gonna save them. The optics would be a little wonky if they didn't do things this way.

Sometimes safe is best. Then again, we know how the Sullivan thing will go down, and it ain't pretty. They are unaware.

The Rangers pick doesn't need to be a late 1st for it to be an absolutely no brainer to trade for Rossi.

This is literally the Family Guy "mystery box" meme. Why trade a 1st for a young top-6 center when you can draft a center with that 1st and hope and pray he ends up a top-6 center?

A top 10 pick in a strong draft like 2026 has a good chance to be more valuable than Rossi. Especially for a rebuilding team. Rossi is a fine player, but nothing special.

No it doesn't? Even in the best drafts, top-10 picks regularly do not end up panning out. That's a ridiculous thing to suggest that a top-10 pick has a "good chance" to be more valuable than an already young top-6 center.

You're lucky if a #8 or so pick ends up even panning out to be a good player.

Haha if this team gives up a top 15 pick in what is considered an at least decent draft for a like 50ish point midget center then I just don't know.

That seems foolish. I don't really get how you guys could say all the things you have been saying about the necessity of rebuilding and stocking this team's prospect pool then be gung-ho for something like THAT.

Bottom third I mean... whatever. Even that seems borderline though depending on WHERE.

Probably because that "50ish point midget center" is 23 years old and likely better than who they'll end up drafting with that pick?

You can keep saying that but you don't know that any better than I do unless you'd like to share your fortune teller?

We can look at past drafts to get an estimate of the probability that a player taken with that pick ends up as good as Rossi. Spoiler alert, it's not high.

Like I said, this is literally the Family Guy "mystery box" sketch.

Re this 2026 NYR 1st for Rossi proposal

I think I'd only trade it for Rossi if the 2026 NYR 1st is "bottom 16" protected (aka the Pens get two 1sts in 2026). Deferred to the 2027 Pens 1st.

Though I'd keep those same conditions and would ask around the NHL to see if there's better value than Rossi.

oh dear, this was my 30,000th post. get a life!
