2025 DRAFT Thread

Those are the best things about Kindel's game. His shot is ok, looks good against whl goalies sometimes.
Consider that Kindel as a 17 year old winger is the #1 PP qb on a team with 4 drafted d-men. That says a lot to me.
Skating is mediocre at best. Definitely needs to improve there to reach his potential.
I think the skating talk is absurd. He isn't at the top of this class or anything, but he is a good skater and the mechanics are pretty solid, so as leg strength goes up, so does his speed.

he has probably lined up more at C this year than on the wing and is better there IMO. I think there's at least a possibility that he can play there full time and at the next level as strength improves.....but as we've seen with Bedard it's a really tough transition.

He has a great toolbox, with plenty of tools in it and the pathway to bigger and better tools is well defined. His numbers are outstanding despite physical limitations that will likely resolve with time.

Compare that to guys who have NHL size/strength with above average speed and "plus" puck skills who have some incredibly bright flashes at the junior level, but their game overall is questionable because their decision making is suspect. These types have an uphill battle at the next level where it's a lot harder to beat guys one on one and teams prey on guys that turn the puck over.

I strongly disagree.

Now, if a junior player is physically inferior to his cohort in junior and merely relying on his intellect to be effective that's one thing.

But guys who utilize physical superiority to be effective in junior are very rarely effective at the next level. It's a combination but in 95% of cases elite hockey sense is essential to even sniff the NHL.

This is (part of) why Jake Virtanen suuuuucks.
Virtanen is one of the dumbest hockey players I've ever seen...and he still made the NHL and almost scored 20 goals. If he had any commitment to improvement he would have been a pretty decent player. Lots of juniors players with "elite hockey sense" who never sniff the NHL. You can't think your way into the NHL if you have no separating skills.

The kind of IQ that separates great players in the NHL from average players is rarely going to be apparent at the junior level. It only emerges when tested against that level of competition. I would venture that no one can tell who the smartest players will be. You might be able to tell who are the dumbest though.

If you want to bet on a smart player Reschny is far more impressive in that category than Kindel. He thinks fast and makes brilliant plays. However as much as I love his game I still question whether it will translate to the next level because he doesn't have as much fast twitch skill as I'd like to see for a small player. And smarts are NOT a reliable trait to project to the next level, as much as you might love it.

Reschny is excellent on his edges and does have some dynamism with how he can wheel around the net and the top of the circles. He can rip the puck also. One of the best playmakers in his class obviously. But has his limitations with regard to pace. Better skater than Kindel but still not explosive. Has a good stick in puck battles but never going to stronger than the majority of opponents, so he's got to get quicker and more dynamic if he wants to be a possession driver. Can stick at center though, I think. Excellent on faceoffs also.

Would still take Carbonneau over both. That guy just has the puck the whole game and has the elite skill and pace to do something good with it every time. Those are the guys I want, unless there are major character flaws. Can't tell you if he's a genius, but pretty smart player on the ice.

I will say that Reschny brings some things that Carbonneau doesn't. Can't say that Kindel brings anything over either of those 2 players.

When he doesn't have the puck the whole game, what is he going to provide?

Ivan Ryabkin.
He’s really intriguing but a bit of a riskier bet. Didnt have the greatest draft season and there are valid questions about his hockey IQ. Plays with an insane mean streak sometimes to his detriment from reports.

Also interesting Button has Carter Bear at 24. I guess there are valid concerns about his acl

Bear didn't have a knee injury?

Our second pick is 47. I like Ravensbergen if he happens to slide a bit. Cullen Potter, Will Horcoff, Czata, Nesbitt, and Fiddler all intriguing options. Also looking at Mateo Norbert and Kristian Epperson, or Nathan Behm at that spot ... anybody familiar with these 3 guys?

Canucks just posted a clip with allvin saying they need to find nhlers outside of the first round. LOL goodbye first round pick

Or could it be the fact that we went almost a decade without drafting a nhl regular outside the first round. And it killed this team in the short and long term.

Hard to hit on picks outside of the first round when you're constantly trading them. How many second rounds pick has this team made in the last decade?

Insane for a team that has made the playoffs twice in that time period.
