2025 DRAFT Thread

The moment I knew Podkolzin was dud is when during the draft highlights they show when a player is selected, there wasn't anything of significance for Podkolzin other than he stands up for his teammates and has the biggest mitts Sam Consentino has seen.

To be fair, Boldy only fell to Minny because of our director of amateur scouting picking Podkolzin ahead of Boldy.
That’s what I was going to say. Many fallers on draft day just bust, like Pods. And these things are so volatile that one team can get lucky and hit on a half dozen or so over a short period of time and it can be most meaningless.

Hope we don't trade the pick. Some players in our range i like

*Braeden Cootes - High motor RC all situations play driver

*Brady Martin - Playmaker physical C dependable high energy guy

*Ben Kindel - Cerebral playmaker RW/C. Smaller (5'10) but is a wide tracker like a Braeden Point or Frank Nazar skating and stature who could play C but has primarily been a RW. Smart 200ft player

*Cole Reschny is another but his skating is a little tough to project. Certainly has the Suzuki/Thomas build is incredibly smart and prolific but i'm just not sure about his pace and if he can make it work. Would be a good late 1st or 2nd round gamble.

Reschny reminds me of Peyton Krebs. Terrific, smart, competitive all-around junior player but I don't know if he really has any tools that will pop in pro and allow for top-6 C production.

I'd have the WHL Cs as :

1) McQueen
2) Kindel
3) Cootes
4) Reschny
5) Gard

Most of the C after McQueen and Deshoyners are roughly all the same size at 6 feet and 175 lbs. Barring the injury to his back scaring teams off, I would expect McQueen and Deshoyers to be part of the second wave after the top 5 of Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, Marton, Frondell to go before pick 10.

So, for those other C, really comes down to the skillset that they like between those guys when it gets to the Canucks pick.

interesting i like Cootes a little more. Kindel is more cerebral and a better playmaker though so i can see why he might project better with better players in a top6 role. I like his wide tracker skating too he's got excellent balance which bodes well for being able to fend off contact and be elusive as he fills out

Cootes speed and motor are relentless. He reminds me a bit of McCann in his draft year and looks a little like Wyatt Johnston too with how he can dictate pace in junior I just wonder about how much he chases and his hockey IQ. May end up a Newhook/Compher type.

Both are exciting prospects who i want to see more of

Reschny is the best of all of them in junior but he's a bit of a slug when you look at NHL projection and like you say what will be his go to lean on skill when he's under 6ft and slow in open ice. A little like the Cristall situation except he's strong that's not an issue. Could also end up a O'Reilly type where he gets overlooked because of skating then just finds enough as he develops and lets his skill take over

I am expecting the Canucks to trade the 1st round pick but you do wonder if they may consider this their only feasible path to acquiring a top 6 center.

I think at 15th I would draft either William Horcoff or Jack Nesbitt. Everything else seems like a mixed bag. Rather get a big, strong center that can play a pro game.

It would be absolutely pure Canucks to win the draft lottery for the first time in franchise history but still end up drafting outside the top 5.

Yes, I have scars from being a decades-long Canucks fan.

If they win the lottery it would be impossible for them to draft outside the top-5. Depending on what happens today, and maybe tomorrow, they will either draft 4th/5th or 14th/15th.

Okay, I see it now. I didn't realize how bad the EC wild card contenders were.

Me too! I had to stop myself from punching a wall. Hell, the Devils are guaranteed a divisional spot and could finish below Vancouver, St. Louis, Calgary, Utah, and Montreal.

Atleast then they would get a legit blue chip prospect and likely a C at that.

So if there was ever a time, and to make up for so such a shit year, now would be it.

Prospects that have played with current Canucks prospects.

Aitcheson (Patterson/Romani)
Kindel (Mynio)
Boumdienne (Willander)

Looking forward to the U-18’s. Milton Gastrin and Cullen Potter in particular.

Should be a wild draft after the top 6-7

At a glance I'm not a fan of this draft lol. I'll have to take a deeper look but just a glance at a dozen guys and their highlights and it's a lot of 'meh.' Some good skill but I'm not even seeing anyone move the needle like Lekkerimaki for me.

Strikes me as a draft where you take a Ravensbergen or a D with a lot of tools with the top choice.

Stramel is one of the worst draft choices ever.
weight problems
cardio problems
4th line problems
transfer problems

why is Minny director being put on a pedestal?

McQueen
Bear
Kindel
Martin
Reschny
Ryabkin

Any one of them would be really nice. Reschny’s playoff performance has been stellar and swaying my decision towards wanting him. 16 points in 7 games. Solid on the draw, plays the PP and PK.

If he continues his playoff performance he’s going top 10.

From the last week of finally looking into this draft I feel confident that there is going to be a solid player available at 15 so that's good. Seems like the draft drops off right around 18 or so.
