NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

Future New York Rangers Cole Reschny and Braeden Cootes, please and thank you

Tools are ranked on a scale from 1-9

Cole Reschny (Ranked 14th OA)

Ceiling - 6.5 Floor - 6 Hockey Sense - 7.5 Compete - 7 Skill - 6.5 Skate - 6 Misc -5

Cole Reschny is a complete, playmaking-center, whose attribute breakdown doesn’t define his game, since he’s more than the sum of his parts. He had one of the better second half-surges out of any draft eligible forward. In the earlier and middle portions of the season, there were flashes of a player who was learning and identifying how to play within his own game. It didn’t always run smoothly for him either. Occasionally, he was invisible for stretches or failed to show enough dynamic plays to have us thinking he could elevate to a top-6 forward. For a smaller forward, we found his coordination was all over the map, producing a wide play spectrum as a result. Sometimes, he would make fantastic open-ice handling plays and follow them up with crisp and accurate high-danger lateral set-ups through layers. On other play sequences, he would botch streamlined and easily managed plays. Towards the end of the season, we felt his confidence increased, and his execution level and overall assertiveness followed. He’s small, but he plays larger than his size, making advanced cutting plays around the goal-line, and his off-puck game continued to improve. We now think Cole can turn into a middle-6 center option.

Some NHL scout Quotes -

"There are a lot of mighty mites in the WHL that I don't like but I like Reschny."

"Outstanding. Knows who he is and what his plan is. He was one of the best." - Guessing this was about his interview

And from one of their own scouts -

"I called him passive on our podcast after watching him in the first half of the season, I look like an idiot after watching him the second half of the season and the playoffs"

Braeden Cootes (Ranked 23rd OA)

Ceiling - 6 Floor - 8.5 Hockey Sense - 7 Compete - 7.5 Skill - 6 Skate - 7 Misc -6

Cootes was a point-per-game player this season and was also the captain of the Seattle Thunderbirds. He also played for Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the U18 in April. We think Cootes has an opportunity to be a 3rd line center and one that could play on PP2 if needed and be a key player shorthanded. We love the energy that he plays with, which bodes well for playoff hockey. He’s a smart player in all three zones with a good compete level away from the puck. The base of this player is his motor and energy that he brings consistently on a shift-to-shift basis. His skill value is predicated on his skating and handling combination, which, when combined with his spatial awareness, allows him to bypass layered traffic and open up the ice for his teammates. This is a critical element of his game, since he doesn’t project to have the best finishing rates and lacks true primary

No NHL scout quotes but word is he interviewed well at the combine.

I gotta say, i'm really disappointed with the quality this year. WAAAAAY shorter breakdowns than they used to give. I'm glad they still have a decent amount of scout quotes, but i'd like to see a lot more detail in the writeups

Mark Edwards has had some pretty serious health issues so I wonder if that sort of truncated things this year.

Sounds like he's doing better though thankfully.

Two players I'm intrigued by simply for their names.

Mans Goos, goaltender out of Farjestad
Ivan Tkach-Tkachenko, goaltender of out Russia. He sounds like the sound effect of a machine gun.

From just these quotes, Coots would appear more in the Rangers wheelhouse

In the unfortunate event that we keep our pick, at 12 I'd be looking at guys who have the chance to add some sort of dynamic element, be it skill, skating, physicality, etc.

Rough order of preference would be:
Martin
Eklund
McQueen
Smith/Aitcheson/Mrtka
Bear

(assuming Schaefer, Misa, Martone, Hagens, Frondell, Desnoyers, O'Brien are all gone in some sort of order)

“in the unfortunate event” lmao.

Wouldnt the “unfortunate event” be your prediction coming true and us being a bottom dweller team next season?

We arent trading this pick away, people need to let it go already.

No, because then we're going to get a better player? Not exactly rocket science bud.

We are going to get a better player? Who is that? What EA NHL trade do you have up your sleeve that no GM would ever accept?

What are you even on about? Next year's draft > This years draft.

Ergo, a high pick next year means we're getting a better player than we'd be picking this year.

Who cares about next years draft. We will be picking 18-22 probably. A good player will be there for us at 12 this draft.

I'm very confused what point you're trying to make, or if you even have one. You're saying "wouldnt the unfortunate thing be if we're a bottom feeder", and then when i respond to it you say "who cares about next year, we will be picking 18-22". Pick a lane bud

You’re not making much sense. Figure out what you want to dispute first then get back to me.

For those who have invested a lot into researching this class, do you think the NYR should keep pick 12?

What are the chances they draft an actual impact player there, and not just another guy with pretty glaring flaws / upside limitations / who is a "project"?

I have my opinion but I haven't truly put in the work this year. So wanted to see what the group thinks.
Rangers need higher end prospects. But there's always a chance that most of the players from 7-down top out at 45 point players. Most of them don't wow me. Judging NHL prospects is really tough because they look great against their peers. NHL is an entirely different league and these players are 17-18, scrawny and not fully grown.

For all the "This guy is the next Tkachuk", they end up as the next, less skilled and productive forward in Tuch.

This is so unhinged I almost respect it

There seem to be a number of large framed physical D who can skate fairly well in this draft.

First rounders or potential first rounders--Smith, Mrtka, Aitcheson, Wang, Hensler, Fiddler---but also Rombach, Psenicka, Amico, Bedkowski, Limatov, Vilchinsky, Barnhill, Phillips, Kettles, Bausov, Kaiser---Rangers could stock up on some of these guys. To me it's been a theme lately of the Rangers going big especially in the later rounds....but really they could start pretty much from round 1 if they chose to.

Personally I'd be going big anyway---I think we need more North South as far as forwards but we also need to build a bigger more bruising defense.
