NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

For me, there's a well-defined top 7 that's inaccessible.

Then 4 guys that I'd want. Martin, McQueen, Smith, Aitcheson. If they go 8-11 and no one drops from the top 7, then I'd be pissed.

Even if we elect to keep the pick, nothing's stopping us from offering PIT to re-swap so they can get two in a row. That is, if we don't like the way it plays out. If PIT really likes how it plays out, they might even send us a tiny something extra.

What if we kept this pick and got a 26 1st for Kreider?
I prefer that…. Rangers do well usually first year of a new coach so if the Rangers are smart, take a chance and keep it. What if they are good as their record indicates with first year of since Galant. And before Quinn, same exact thing

I wish we had more of an idea of what the roster was gonna be, but past history and Drury's ass being on the hot seat does support this

Do the Rangers use one their 2ed round pick and trade to the Bolts for Howard who is a prospect who recently requested a trade?????
Bolts recieve a 2nd round pick if he walks. So I think they hold out for more than a 2nd round right now, even if the 2nd is going to be earlier than they recieve. Cost of a team wanting the player now.

Cullen Potter is the guy we need to take

Absolutely agree. He’s got a skillset i wouldn’t at all be shocked to see get taken off the board way earlier than any rankings i’ve seen have him, so i don’t hate it at 12. If the rangers feel confident he’d definitely be on the board another 5-10 picks down though, would love to grab another pick or 2 in the process. That’s the skillset this org desperately needs to get a few of in the system over the next few drafts and hope at least 1 is a home run.

In theory, the Rangers could make a trade to acquire a later 1st this year and trade Pittsburgh that 1st rounder to remove the possibility of losing next years first. So basically, the acquired 1st in 2025 for the Rangers 1st in 2026

Not sure that's correct. I think Pittsburgh would still get the original pick (#11) even if Rangers traded up. (I could be wrong, of course.)

In theory it could work. If the Ranger officially state they will keep their 2025 pick, then the Pens will own the Rangers 2026 pick and that trade (JT Miller trade) is complete.

The Rangers could work out a separate deal with the Pens to acquire their 2026 pick back at that point. This theoretically could be the 2025 first the Rangers acquire in say a Kreider trade (let's call it pick 25) for the Rangers 2026 pick back.

As long as the organization thinks Potter stays at C in the National, he’d be a great pick.

That scenario would work. I guess I missed the inference in Viper's post that the first deal would close the JT deal. If I'm the Pens, I don't make that deal.

Agreed, it depends on several factors, like how do they feel the Rangers will fair next season? If they think they will bounce back, do the Pens value a mid 20s pick in this draft or in 2026? They might take the 2025 pick because they want to get ammo to Sid, Malkin and Letang before they are done.

Who knows

I think they're already starting to look past the Sid/Malkin/Letang days.....I think they hold out for next year's draft.

I said it earlier. We can elect to keep this pick and see how the top 10 shakes out. If we don't like how it looks, we can work something out with PIT on the fly.

They might be salivating at getting two picks in a row. If they are, we might manufacture a small add for "free" if we work something out with them after electing to keep it at first.

And to be honest, I bet PIT mgmt believes our 1st next year will be later than what NYR fans think it will be.

It's a swing for the fences pick in that he's got the ability to be as good as some of the guys who are going to go in the top 5 and there isn't a better skater in this draft class (he isn't just fast, he's explosive.)

I wouldn't go as far as to call him a project pick but he's got a ton of work to do. He ripped off like 115 shots in 35 games and while 13 goals is a strong season for a freshman (an early enrollee no less), isn't amazing output considering how good his shot is.

One of the big criticisms of him and something that I caught onto as well is that he is way to content to use his feet to get into the OZ and then will just fire a shot from just inside the blue line with out any purpose instead of using his feet to drive to the middle of the ice or push defenders back and looking to make a play a little deeper in the OZ. Thats stuff that he flashed on occasion so at least it is there but that needs to become a regular thing for him, especially as he moves up because weak unscreened wrist shots aren't going to fly at the NHL level.

If you're dead set on a C in that position I like Cootes more but this isn't a pick that would bug me.
