NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

The draft lottery is next Monday?

After winning the lottery twice only to draft worse players (Laf, Kakko) than we would draft in our pre-lottery position, it would be nice to win the lottery and actually land a legitimately great player.
Yeah but the problem is our development of those players

This isnt the draft i'd wanna win the lotto. Only one legitimate star pick and hes a defenseman.

The sane thing is to do one season of hard resetting the roster if possible, and hope for a win next year.

New bob rankings:
- Scheafer & Misa then a gap.
- Hagens falls to 5 ("Scouts seem to be more or less evenly split on the reasoning. Some say his play has tailed off; others say he was simply leapfrogged by Misa, Martone and Frondell; a few suggest it was a combination of both factors.")
- Jake O'Brien continues to rise, now at 7th
- McQueen falls to 8th, but a BIG injury risk ("At this particular moment in time, none of our scouts surveyed said they would be comfortable taking McQueen where they currently rated him — eight of the 10 had him between Nos. 3 and 10 with two more saying they’ve already red flagged him due the spectre of injury. The majority of those eight scouts who see the towering centre, if healthy, as a bona fide top 10 prospect said the final decision would ultimately rest with their team’s doctor.")
- Top Dmen after Schaefer are Smith and Mrtka, ranked 10 & 11

McQueen is very risky. It could work out well or really bite you in the ass and some teams are going to be scared of taking him that high. Hope he fully recovers and has a healthy career.

Any evidence of that or just conjecture?
Just speculation. They're awful thin at C in their prospect pool and traded their only blue chip center prospect for a wing prospect.

Once Crosby, Malkin, Letang run ride off into the sunset, they're going to be really, really bad. Like Buffalo bad.

Until they're gifted McKenna and DuPont, that is.

a star LD is great. Defense takes longer to develop.
I like Misa, I think he's a top 6C. I'm not entirely sold on star.
I’m not sold on him being a C. And he’s in a tough spot being too good for the Dub but can’t play in the A. He’s a perfect candidate for going the college route now that it’s an option for Major Junior players.

In terms of ‘weak’ draft I remember the same talk in 2017. No clear #1 at the time, and lack of depth in round 1. But you still have a handful of really good players outside of the top 5. Hopefully we can get a faller rather than a reach which usually dooms us.

Just give up the pick this year. Save next years. We will be moving Kreider, panarin, zibs, and so forth, this is not a contending or playoff team. Just have more ammo for a better and deeper draft next year
None of us knows whether that will happen or not, but it seems unlikely that Drury will move all of them. The one thing I can say with certainty is that Drury has every intention of making the playoffs next year.

They take even longer if you wait a year before drafting them. If we get 1st overall, Schaefer is a no brainer. I don't care if he isn't ready for 2 or 3 years.

I’m curious, if Pittsburgh wants the Rangers first this year in lieu of next year, could they work out a side deal with the Rangers to push them to make it this years pick? By this I mean, could Pittsburgh offer this years 3rd to entice the Rangers to give up their pick and not wait for next year when the player will be another year away and the pick may not be anywhere close to as high? Could that happen?

Forgot, Kyle Dubious used to be GM of the Soo Greyhounds. Hope you're wrong on the Pitt pick.

I can see a world where 4 of the top 10 are D (Schaefer, Smith, Mrkta, Aitcheson.)

Did a bit of a dive on Aicheson today and I'd almost be surprised if he doesn't go top 10 if not shortly after. It's a gamble as he's still a bit raw but he's got a ton of potential as a 2 way defender and he really brings the boom (some guys just hit people, he legit plays a very mean game.) Someone is going to want to take a shot on that because if you can smoke people and reliably play top 4 minutes, you're basically a unicorn in this league now.

Would prefer him to Mrkta at 11 if the Rangers are choosing between the 2.

Pens fan here and two things are in play. Drury thinks the Rangers will be better next year. thus keeping this years pick suggests next year the pick will be in higher 16 as Rangers are playoff bound. But Sullivan will play his system and many of the Rangers are not going to like or have the kind of game to do so. Until Dubas came, Sullivan got what he wanted and that failed badly. Be very careful with Sullivan and his insistence in what he demands. Drury will give into Sullivan and that is not a good thing.

Failed so badly that they won back to back cups?

I think that Sullivan has done a poor job adjusting to what he's had the last few years but if the GM isn't getting his coach what he needs and what the team needs, thats a pretty shitty GM.

Brady Martin would look good in a Rangers sweater at #11 assuming he doesn't go before #11 after his U18 play for Canada.

Drury gave Igor $92M and hired Sullivan in less than 4 days after he fired. The Rangers gave Sullivan probably the biggest AAV of any NHL coaching hire in NHL history. The Rangers are expecting a better than a 22nd overall finish next season. Mike Babcock got $50M and 8 years. $6.25M AAV. Sullivan beat that AAV. $7M. Maybe less than 8 years. The Rangers pick next season will be lower than #11. Pittsburgh can have that pick.

Gotta see the lotto results first

I'd operate from the assumption that Drury will be about moving heaven and earth to get the Rangers back into the playoffs next year. Another assumption two straight seasons out of the playoffs will put a lot of pressure on his continuing to keep his job. It's not even about being a contender next year. Looking at the Devils they really weren't a contender this year but they made it back to the playoffs. It was progress in a way and particularly without their premier offensive weapon down the stretch.

Making the playoffs next year---if we moved this year's pick to the Pens would mean our pick next year will probably be somewhere between 17 and 21. Next assumption if the Rangers turn the pick over to the Pens this year it's more likely than not that they will move next year's 1st rounder for help down the stretch. If the Rangers have another shit year like this year---the likelihood is they will make player moves before the deadline that will bring back draft picks/prospects. Again those will be likely from playoff bound teams so the latter half of the 1st round may be in play depending on who we move and again if we make the playoffs our 1st will be in that range too.

Anyway Drury has no intention of the Rangers doing two years in a row of non playoff hockey. None. I'd take the pick this year if only because I think if he holds on to next year's 1st he will move it later on anyway.
