NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

Every Penguins fan in the world wants the pick next year.
I think its a mixture of Fear (us) and Hope (them) than reality. The magic of what's behind door #2 is so much more enticing than staring at what's right in front of us. "what if we give up a lottery pick" and "#11 in an average draft isn't that exciting"

The rangers aren't the 11th worst team in the NHL. I actually see this as a solid opportunity to take advantage of a really bad trade from Vancouver and get better now.

What's funny is I wonder if this will end up not being a big deal, we'll take the #11 and end up giving up the #19 next year (like who really cares at that point). Its the fear / hope of a new car behind the curtain (#1) that is driving a lot of this angst.

Don’t count those chickens so fast. 12th in the lottery standings on Fridaybcould still fall to 14th if lower teams win the draft lottery. 11th would guarantee the Rangers keep the pick this year.
12th in the lottery has a 0.2% chance to move to 14. That's not happening.

Just for people wondering, if we end 11th in the lottery we have a 3.1% chance of #1, 3.0% chance of #2, 0.1% chance of #3. So about 6% chance overall, in other words, don't hold your breath we win the lottery.

This makes no sense to me… we’d have a 31x better chance of winning 1OA than 3OA?

Yes. Just the way the lottery works. Its only possible if #12-13 win the first lottery and move top spots to #2. Then the next pick is for the #3 pick. Or something like that. Basically it won't happen. The lottery only picks the first 2 picks.

CBJ's win Tuesday means, with just 36 hours left in regular season,
NYR in a scrum with NYI and DRW for 10th, 11th, 12th pre-lottery slots

we won't know before late Thursday,
no DRW result tonight will resolve any of this on its own
[NYR RW/ROW tiebreaker totals reportedly give NYR 'worse' pick in any tie]

I'm fully prepared for the deluge of angry fans when we "win" on Thursday, move to 12 and the world ends for the higher draft pick crowd. Gotta get that 0.5% uplift in advance of the lottery!!!

Their championship was when NYR got the #1 pick in 2020 (personally mine was 1994)

A season full of shit, it would be nice to get a good draft pick (or better). It’s the silver lining of this disaster. Dont think anyone really expects to win the lottery, more so we want to be up for when the player drops and not have the team right in front of us grab him. Someone always drops. We lucked out with Gabe a couple years ago.

Again, it’s all about the silver lining.

Agreed. I'm all for being practical...there's no reason to win and hurt chances at this point. But in the mid to long run its not really that impactful.

It's less about the slightly better odds and more about the fact that at 12, we can't move up to #1.

I thought you could only move up a max of 10 spots? I may be wrong.
EDIT: Nevermind it just dawned on me 11 to 1 IS 10 spots. Math is hard.

We could have easily been in the top-5 if we sucked just a bit more. Morons.
We could have also made playoffs if we won like 2-3 more games... If we win our last game and Columbus and Montreal lose, then we're just that wreck against Philly and 1 other wreck away from making it. The east was pretty bad and there for the taking. But we showed 0 effort.

Nightmare scenario: Penguins win the lottery this year and we hand them a top 5 pick next year. I realize the odds are astronomical but I've been a draft conspiracy theorist since Crosby.
NHL, you just never know. I mean, Boston from 23 to 25 went from best team, to 7th best, to 5th worst.

It's also not considered a deep draft. Of the current 16 clubs in the PO mix, only LA, STL, Win, Car, Wash, and Mon have their 1st rounder. The other 10 clubs moved it. Forget the actual pick #. Have to think who is going to be there and whether that player is worth the risk of potentially having a bad season and worrying about the pick you need to hand over to Pitt next season.

Schaefer, Misa, Frondell, Martone, Hagens should all be gone within top 5-7 at least. McQueen, Deschoyners, O'Brien, Eklund appear to likely go in the top 10. But, someone could fall. McQueen had a back injury which cost him half the season. Eklund is really thin at 160 odd lbs. So, he needs time to fill out. After this group, mostly a pick'em. So, if they end up at 12, unlikely that any of that 2nd wave falls to 12. If you are sitting at 10, then there's a chance someone falls.

But, won't know that until after the time to decide when to hand over the pick.

Barely sneaking in, only to get blown out in the first round would have been worse. At least now we will see some real changes.

Of course. But for Pittsburgh, the chance at getting a lottery pick next year is much more enticing than drafting Jackson Smith or something this year. The Rangers have a lot of questions - should they be bottom 10? No, not with their goalie especially. But hockey is weird and goalies are even weirder. There is so much unknown in New York right now, we don't even know who their coach will be.
