NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

That just isnt going to happen. Drury is not giving it up, all that does it show he’s already given up on next season and that’s his job.

His job is to build a Cup winner and if the decision is already made because "it would show he's giving up on next year," without analyzing whether it's better to have next year's pick than this year, then he's REALLY not doing his job.

Which I've already concluded he's not and would terminate him.

Flip the thinking...if you were Pittsburgh would you want the certainty of a top 13 pick now or the hope of the pick being higher next year?
...or the possibility of it being in the second half of the round in 2026.

Sounds like there isn’t a ton of faith in Drury as a GM to make a sound decision.
We are definitely making the pick next year and Drury will be giving up an unprotected ‘26 pick. Forgoing next year’s pick as others have said is tantamount to admitting next year we EXPECT to be worse.

No GM that isn’t actively rebuilding will think that. It just gives me a ton of pause because we need a new Head Coach and potentially need to move on from some core players (Kreider, Zib, Key) without any guarantee of replacements.

Again I’m just hoping we win the lottery this year, find takers for both Kreider and Zibanejad, and sign some combination of impact forwards (Marner, Bennett, Marchand, Ehlers, Boeser) and defenseman (Gavrikov, Provorov)

It's your opinion. You have no idea what the team will look like next year. And you are assuming that every player who had a down year will continue to have another down year next season.

Sorry I misworded that.

I’m not saying next year we will be worse; my thought was that if Drury gives up next year’s pick then he be doing us under the thought we improve next season.

Don't care. I hear/read that every year. Every year there are surprises.

We can get picks for next year by trading Key and Kreider.

Those picks will be at the end of the draft in round 1. I know you don’t care but there’s a big difference between a top 10 pick in a loaded draft and a late 20s pick. Especially for a team like us that lacks talent.

Also look at how that worked out? We won the draft in 2 years in weak draft classes with laffy and kakko. How did they work out. The point isn’t to be short sighted.

I would be crazy surprised if this team makes the playoffs this coming year. We are a lottery team.

I think it's very very very likely there will be changes including a new coaching group. Quite often just that one thing means the team will have a bump upwards and Chris Drury if he manages to survive is not going to want to miss the playoffs two years in a row. Though some player changes seem more obvious than others at this point in time......like I think Kreider is going to be gone.....possibly they'll find a taker for Mika.....possibly even move on from Lafreniere and/or K'Andre. All that said we have younger players who should be getting better and whatever replacement players Drury brings in + the new coaching staff and the expectations will be to do a lot better........and just a better defensive system than the one Laviolette/Housley employed should help out our goalies too.

Maybe I'll be wrong but I'm not automatically assuming the Rangers are heading back into the dark ages of 97 to 04.

Most likely picking 11th. Isles will have to beat the Jets.
Possibly picking 12th even if the Red Wings can't pick up a single point in their last two games. We're tied at 83 and have more regulation wins. Wings have two games left against NJ and TOR. Those two teams have their playoff positions locked as well so maybe they rest players up as well.
We have to lose to the Bolts who having beat Florida tonight, clinch home ice advantage in their series so they can afford to rest their best players or anyone else they want to give a rest or keep out to save themselves from injury.

Islanders play the Jackets their final game. if Montreal doesn't win or go to Overtime tomorrow the Jackets are gonna be pushing hard to win their final game in regulation vs the Islanders.

Don’t count those chickens so fast. 12th in the lottery standings on Fridaybcould still fall to 14th if lower teams win the draft lottery. 11th would guarantee the Rangers keep the pick this year.

While possible, odds of that are super slim. I don't even know the lowest team to move up, only one I can think of is Chicago in 2019 when they moved from 12th to 3rd.
