NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

Been away for a few days but not much has changed. The Rangers are in the 13th draft position pre lottery. They are in a flat foot points tie with Detroit with the Wings trailing by virtue of the tiebreaker. The Islanders and the BJs are also knocking on the back door. The only team ahead of the Rangers in the points standings that’s within sight is Utah.

The bigger picture looks awful. 6 points out of a playoff spot and only 6 games left to play includ8ng 2X vs Tampa and games against Florida and Carolina.

The draft lottery will take on an interesting twist with the Rangers quandary.

Sometimes teams find their games when there's no pressure anymore because they're officially done. Mika puts up 10 points in his last 6 or K'Andre playing mistake free hockey the rest of the way. Kreider scores 5 power play goals......that kind of a thing.

Hopefully instead they continue to sleep.

Give up the pick this year if it’s not top 5.
I expect Rangers to be aggressive this offseason for at least 1 more impact forward and defenseman. Maybe even targeting a rebuilding team to swap some of our vets for their struggling youth

This draft has some question marks for sure. Obviously you have to keep a top 5, or whatever, because there's no guarantee you're going to get a good pick next season.

Matthew SchaeferLD1Still Injured? Needs that John Cena rehab class.
Michael Misa C/LW-Prob NHL winger2Hurt? Meh playoffs. Needs to move his feet more. Smart player.
Porter Martone RW3-5Plays the way NYR fans want the rest of the team to play. If things go right, he could be the Tkachuk-lite without trading for Tkachuk.. If things don't go right, you'll see him force pucks to nobody. Also needs to attend skating lessons with Laf.
James HagensC3-5Great skater. Looked to have a tougher time than I thought he would at NCAA.
Anton FrondellC/LW - Think 3-5Another non-nonsense type of player. I really like him, but this high in a draft? Makes me start to question how good the draft class is for the top 8 or so. Could use a more explosive first couple of acceleration steps. He could make me and others look stupid for questioning him if everything goes right because he can absolutely rip the puck.
Eklund, Desnoyers, and McQueen could easily move up depending on who is selecting. McQueen is a big boy, but another prospect who I look at and say "why isn't your skating better?" You have all the tools. Don't be that guy held back because of skating.

Playoffs all but out of the picture. Tragic number is 3 points. Still hard to believe.

Rangers sit in 13th draft position (via the tie breaker) but are in a four way with the Isles, Wings and BJs at 77 points. They could easily drop as low as 10th and Buffalo and Anaheim are both only three points behind. If the Flyers beat the Rangers tomorrow, We could be looking at bloody Thursday.

I really like Desnoyers. He gives me Bergeron/Toews vibes. the Flyers will pick before us (unless we win the lottery) and he should be available---they already have his brother. I think they possibly will take him.

He will have to add a lot more muscle for the NHL, and get better at his side-to-side, edges. Will be a good pick if everything pans out, especially with his compete level.

I didn't want to say anything yet, lol. 6-5 now.

Edit: Okay, now it's done. Need a win from Anaheim tonight.

I know some posters are blowing up on the game thread but the team is just playing out the string now. We were cooked before the game even started and winning tonight (or tomorrow or the game after) wasn't going to help the franchise. There's not a lot of will in that locker room and our defensive scheme is just trash. When Pelletier scores his goal we have both our defensemen up near the blue line for a play that developed halfway down the right side boards and players out of position like this hasn't been a surprise for a while. Throw in our useless power play and another shorthanded against. The players lost faith in each other way back in November/December and they never really got it back. I think they lost faith in their coaches too and vice versa--the coaches in them. It's been a bizarre and very bad season.

Okay...so it's pretty much set in stone that their pick will be in the Top13. They will not usurp Utah or anyone ahead of UTA in the standings.

So...Can someone confirm if my understanding of the situation is right.

It was first reported that if the '25 1st is Top13, then the '26 1st would then automatically be transferred to PIT instead. But apparently it was later revealed that the Rangers still have the choice to transfer the '25 1st instead...correct?

Pick will prob be in the 10-12 range.

I don't think they're gonna give up the 25 1st. I think they're gonna kick the can to '26 and hope the team improves next year. Whether that's the correct decision is another discussion....

They have until 48 hours before the '25 draft to inform Pittsburgh if they get this year's pick or next year's (2026 pick).

The lottery is typically 2 weeks before the draft. I was holding out hope that the Rangers could muster enough heart to preserve their 2026 pick but now it's full tank. We are 10th OA currently and it's possible for us to go up 1-3 more spots. We're going to have to trade players away to get some 2026 draft capital back (pleasepleaseplease)

Sabres are not that far away either and they've won 5 in a row. We could end up #8.
"With the 8th overall pick, the New York Rangers are proud to select from the Brandon Wheat Kings, Roger McQueen."

1 year later...

"With the first overall pick, the Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to select..."

1 year later...

@FriedgeHNIC
NYR draft pick, Roger McQueen has retired from professional hockey due to recurring back issues.

Can't f***ing wait.
