The Pens have zero say. If the pick is top 13, the Rangers have until 48hrs before the draft to decide if they are keeping it or transferring it to the Pens. My guess is that if the pick is 10+ the Pens get it.

The Rangers will keep it if it’s top 13. It’s an asset they can use to improve their team.

Correct. Dreger just said a few days ago that Dolan expects the team to make the playoffs and if they miss this season, not one player, coach, or executive will be safe from being changed to make the playoffs next season. Zero chance they are conveying on the pick if it is top 13. They 100% expect to be better next season and can use a 2025 1st more readily.

Rangers are an old team and have an ugly goalie contract starting next season. I am more than happy for them to keep this years pick. Uncle Gary will give us McKenna next year with it.

If it's next years (2026) I'm incline to it being traded for the Pens needs. They are not gonna strike gold in UFA leaving the trade route.

I agree, I seriously doubt they'll move it if they don't have to. Canucks should have given us their 1st instead it appears. Good job by Dubas there.
I seriously doubt they'll move any 1st rounders over the next three drafts unless it is to move up even higher.

No way. There's a good chance the Rangers are a non playoff team or worse next year, in a deeper draft, and a shot at McKenna is a decent bet.
If the Rangers pick rolls over to next year, they can trade the lowest and effectively bet on the idea that only one of the Pens and Rangers will be bad. Doesn't seem too unreasonable.

I think Shesterkin is bound to bounce back, and while Kreider isn’t a 50 goal scorer anymore he’s better than the 19 he’s gotten this year. Lafreniere fell off too but that doesn’t seem sustainable especially given his age. Then add a full season of J.T. Miller.

Seems like a very unwise bet to make given the 2026 draft class and both teams have an aging core that are currently lottery teams and have been for almost the entire season. Penguins are not close to being competitive. Both picks could easily be top 16 again even if both teams have some improvement. Depends on how much the organization is going to prioritize competing with Crosby versus rebuilding for the future. Seems obvious to me which path they should take.

The only way I'm trading that Rangers 1st is if they're getting offered a 23 year old or younger top-4 D with top pair upside for it, and that's if the pick is 2025 or 2026. If there is an equivalent situation of the Bruins trading Dougie Hamilton this year, definitely put that pick on the table for it. If not, keep the pick.

Rossi could maybe be that player, Guerin seems really keen to get rid of him. Id be trying to see if they'd take Rakell for him first though

Which means the Pens can exploit that pick this summer or even at the draft.
It fallows what Dubas say's about using the Caps formula. Caps traded the Bruins 1st for Sandin (23 at the time) from Toronto, which he was a part of.

You can't compare the two as equal. The NYR's have the better depth and is much younger, and the better goalie. They are far closer to be able to flip things around next season. They are not a 1-line team.
