I stated this before but what do you do if your the Rangers and this pick ends up at #12. Do you give the pick to the Pens in a weaker draft or do you bet/hope your a playoff team next year. For me this is the best position for the Penguins.
Also, impossible to predict a value from year to year but is the 2025 #12 pick valued at the #17 pick of the 2026 draft? Tough to answer that until next year imo.
Oh so they get to choose if the pick goes into the protected lot? Interesting.

Pretty sure you cannot pick, or it would have been said in the trade. It's top 13 protected, they either pick and it's next year for us or it's ours if if not top 13.

Could be wrong but it doesnt seems like they have a choice. The language is "the 2025 draft pick is top-13 protected and will transfer to 2026 if it falls in the top 13".

They all sound like that and every top X protected pick comes with an implied caveat that the team can choose to give it up even though protected. So I’m not sure the language matters in this case. What was the language when the Pens gave up a top 10 protected pick for EK?

if you finish last and get the first pick, does it still count as winning the lottery? :dunno:
The actual wording says you can't advance.
(3) Limit on Teams Winning a Lottery Draw
No single team will be able to advance in the Draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two (2) times in any five (5) year period.
This limitation will not affect a Club’s ability to retain its presumptive Draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the Club moving down in Draft Order to the extent other Clubs advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws. For purposes of clarity, the limitation would attach to the team, not the specific pick.

If you finish last and you pick first, that's not moving up. Ideally, we finish 3rd or 4th last and get 3rd or 4th so that it opens up the possibilities of advancing in the McKenna and Dupond drafts.

And just like that, we're tied with the Kraken at a 0.466 point percentage, with Buffalo just behind (or ahead, in this context) at 0.464. It's anyone's race to lose for the #4 lottery slot.
Just have to hope Crosby doesn't hulk out again and lead the Pens to yet another late season surge that finds them just outside the playoffs.

I think you ideally get a C and a D with their 2 1sts if the Rangers pick falls in 2025, but it also largely depends on where the Penguins 1st ends up. If it's like #8, I think you take Mrtka or Smith with the Penguins 1st and either O'Brien or Bear with the Rangers 1st. But if their 1st is like #4, that really changes things because it gets into the Martone/Frondell/Misa debate.

Right now I'm hoping for Mrtka with the Penguins 1st and O'Brien with the Rangers 1st. But a lot can change between now and the draft that changes my mind with that. If he somehow slips, I think Desnoyers with the Penguins 1st and Mrtka with the Rangers 1st would be amazing as well.

The Penguins' farm is too weak to put any stock into position at this stage of the rebuild. Best player available is the way to go.

Drafting based on need/position is never a good idea imo. Once upon a time, the Pens were touted as having a great collection of D prospects and literally all of them but Dumo busted. You just don't know how players careers are going to go.

I’m dreaming too, Danny lol

And then Sid starts skating in secret at Neville Island with Army, gets in the best shape of his life, and comes back to play 3C for one last run at it, while hosting McKenna at his home. The circle is complete.

Eh, Maata is a fine #4 despite all the injuries he suffered. Other than that yeah.
