2025 DRAFT Discussion

Show me someone else who shares this opinion....

Pronman is the guy who is highest on him and even he says this:

HP has him at #39 and says this:

Elite Prospects has him at #48 and says this:

Button has him at #38 on his final ranking.

Central Scouting is maybe the highest I can find for this guy aside from Pronman, and they have him 15th among just NA skaters.
Bobs final list has him at 17, one spot below Carbonneau. A lot higher than any of those lists

Busy year at work and hfboards being wonky has me the least prepared for a draft I’ve been since probably 2016. I will spend the next couple nights reading the takes of the more informed posters here, then I’ll pour a whiskey ginger on draft night and hope for the best.

apparently the Rangers are giving Pittsburgh the 12th overall instead of giving them next years pick

feels like a pretty clear negative expected value move to me, it's pretty unlikely their pick is gonna be higher next year and then there's also the whole picking a year sooner being worth more thing to consider on top of that

Seems like a week before draft so many hottakes, conspirancy theories

It is funny how some (same?) geniuses continue to split between NA and European scouting as if Yzerman has some Jekyll/Hyde in him. One of the first things Yzerman did was making sure that Hakan cross checks NA players and Draper and Co have a look on Eurpoean ones. There is one view from them, nobody is pounding a table in the first round. If Red Wings have Danielson ahead of ASP, because Hakan also signed it off. I think the success of Yzerman's drafting is actually making sure that everything is challenged and no stupid bias are present. Only so you can draft Seider at 6.

By now everybody should know how Yzerman drafts, high IQ, very competetive, good skaters. They don't draft defensemen who cannot defend at their current level (ASP's issue was size, but not that he does not play defense). Going by this we should be able to eliminate Smith, Carbonneau, Lakovic and Nesbitt. Maybe Reschny. Theoretically they should like Eklund, Aitcheson, not sure about Bear. They can always surprise us, but in the last couple of years Yzerman was rather easy to predict. Maybe they take somebody like Kindel or Reid who are not talked at this slot, but it is not like there is a huge gap.

Idk man, feels unnecessarily risky, can’t we just go the chalk route and draft Eklund or Bear?

Lol.
Oh yeah, Im not vouching for Nesbitt at Detroits pick. Just pushing back a bit on the sentiment about him being a bad prospect. I dont think hes a reach where Detroit picks but I'll gladly take Bear or Eklund lol. (Or Aitcheson/Smith/Carbonneau for the record).

I really think Bear is a guy you draft and in a couple years hes driving guys nuts with Kasper on the second lne in a playoff series

Flip side is next years draft is better and you give yourself security of not having a 1st rounder if the season goes way off the rails and they're picking like 6OA for example. I think it wad the right move I expect them to finish in a similar spot next year anyways so just mitigate the risk of disaster in a better draft.

My cousin's girlfriend's dog heard a rumor that Draper and Hakan have a fistfight before the draft each year and the winner gets to make the first round pick.

I listened to the hockeyprospect.com talk about Bear and they were really gushing over him so I went and watched some of him and dude…. He’s so good.

I would be really excited if we could end up with him as our pick.

Flyers going to take Brady Martin. Man I really like what they're building over there.

We need to suck more to get a shot at some of these talents. So frustrating we're the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NHL.
Martin is so overrated

I am hoping we either draft Eklund or Aitcheson. If not, trade back a little and try to either grab Bear or Prokhorov, I'd even be happy if we are able to snag Boumedienne later in the round if possible. Mason West is also super intriguing.

It's irrelevant. Håkan still did pick a guy on first round.
ASP was such a public prospect. I’m sure Hakan recommended but everyone in the organization scouted him heavily in person. It would have been a group decision.

ASP was playing 30 minutes a game and won defenseman of the tournament at the U18’s. Yzerman and Draper were in the seats watching.

With all the negative hype there is about how old Aitcheson is with his Sept 21 birthdate I checked some other dates. Martone, Eklund, McQueen, Hensler, Spence, Zonnon, and Vansaghi are all within a month of him. That’s just the first rounders according to the Hockey News. His age doesn’t bother me anymore
