Carry a line? Maybe not. Contribute more than a complimentary guy? Yes.

I think he does a lot of things well that help with puck posession. Moreso than a guy I typically think of as a passenger.
I think he's one of those "passengers" that helps the team way more than your typical passenger. I'm not saying he's Brendan Gallgher but there's some similarities there. If he becomes that hard to play against, culture building garbage man that other teams hate.... does he carry his own line? No, but he's definitely worth a pick at, 13 and is a really good player that helps you win

Yzerman should continue to draft safe in the first. I thought different last season, but now , just look what Kasper, Buchelnikov, Kiiskennen, Lombardi and Plante doing. Just continue do the same. Suddenly our second round picks looking decent, just feeling optimistic for team future.

We been playing it too safe . Kasper has looked great but until we see everyone else who knows what they’ll become (kiiskinen was had in a deal, if we think someone else has upside now is the time to make the deal for players just drafted we might have liked)

Since he won’t be there at 44 a part of me is like f this shit let’s take a big swing and trade back a few times to get 2nds and draft mason west at like 20. I dont care about the football stuff I’m taking a swing if it fails it fails ... only 18 in August 6’6 218 already

I know it won’t happen and ppl will think it’s crazy but even if it’s not him we should be taking a swing with this pick cause we need some elite talent on this team badly

I don't know if I buy that the wings have played it "safe" in the first round. The only ones I'd personally would have categorized as safe are Kasper and Edvinsson and they've both proven that there's a lot more to their offensive game and really weren't low upside picks. I wasn't sold on their offensive upside.

Other prospects that have been categorized as safe but I personally didn't agree with at the time of the draft were Seider and Danielson. Danielson still needs to prove it but I always thought he had a really good offensive game to go along with his mature defensive one. Seider is obvious now.

One I'm unsure is MBN as he was also seen as "safe" but he has a high-end shot, and that's something that if a smaller player was drafted with a similar profile (let's say Caufield or Debrincat), they would have NEVER been categorized as safe but rather a high upside pick... but because MBN is big and physical he's seen as having a lower upside.

As for the other first round picks, I don't think anyone would think Raymond, ASP and Cossa were safe picks. They were upside picks with a certain floor of maturity that the wings do seem to always look for in their first round picks.

Last draft I was hoping for Hage , not MBN . MBN was safe pick because he could play in any 4 lines , now Hage could become first or second line player, I doubt he will be good as fourth line.
Now for this coming draft I see Lakovic or Reschny have higher sealing, but they are not safe, guys like Martin or Bear or Cootes could play and you got NHL player, Veleno was safe pick , Berggren wasn't

every opinion ive read on cootes theres never been a criticism besides him not having high level offensive talent .
and with physical maturity he can improve hand strength and thusly his shot

Smaller Rasmussen?

A less skilled version, but I definitely see the comparisons.
Man, I don't watch these leagues and only dive into highlights around this time of year, but man I'm kind of baffled here. Cootes is one of my favorite players in the draft* and its because I love his skill. I see great hands and edgework, nice vision and passing, a good wrist shot with a deceptive release, an effective one timer.

Any mean streak, competitiveness, 200 ft play is just icing on the cake

(* I only look at guys the wings might draft so I just ignore the top 5 or so)

He looks kinda boring to me , but I will not be complaining if we got him, just please don't take him before Atchison, Bear, Mrtka or Eklund

Can someone convince me on Mrtka? I have some Czech family and they seem to really like him. When I watch highlights, I'm just not that impressed.
