2025 DRAFT Discussion

Watching the panthers play an extremely greasy style of play with zero repercussions and absolutely dismantling some amazing teams tells me that that’s how this team should be built. If Martin is there you sprint to the podium for him. This team is going to have to be built similar to them. Kasper martin and MBN would be an utterly disgusting line to have to play against.
I’m sure we can win cups with marner debrincat raymond on the top 6 we’ll just duck everyone attempting to hurt us

Seriously I’d have np taking Martin but at this point he’ll be gone. With our prospect pool deep I’d have np being agressive this draft and trading up if we don’t trade it for immediate help

Buffalo seems to want hockey trades, not more rebuilding lotto tickets.

Also, all I keep hearing about this draft is that after the first five or six guys, you start getting into prospects with various obvious flaws to their makeups. That 13th pick isn't going to have a ton of value if you're trying to pull back a good NHLer in a deal.
Fair. Which is why I would think about sending Danielson, Rasmussen/Berggren, and the 13th to them for Byram.

Danielson might just be a 3rd line center, Rasmussen/Berggren aren’t a big loss, and the 13th might just be the sweetener. Considering this is Buffalo, that might work. Regardless, Byram would be the defenseman I’d pursue. His age is in line with the core.

If Danielson is our 3rd line center, it's because Marco is an amazing second line center. I genuinely think Nate is being underrated pretty significantly around here. IMO he has just as much potential as Kasper and no way am I trading him to fill out our top 4.

I like Byram, too. I think he'd look really good next to Seider, or holding down the left side on the second pair. But I'm also okay grabbing a guy or two in free agency to hold that fort for a few years.

I'm not sure how enthusiastic Yzerman will be moving kids. With how frustrated Yzerman seemed at his pressers, I get the impression he wants to clean house a bit, while dealing prospects/picks is adding to what we have. Will he be able to? Who knows, but I think that's the goal. He'll look to add something in UFA, and deal corresponding pieces off the roster. Like, we sign Bennet, ditch Compher. We sign Lindgren, we ditch Holl and Gus.

Need to move up. Seattle might be interesting, because 8 looks like a sweet spot. (Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, Martone, O’Brien, Desnoyer, Froundel, Martin)

Gives you an outside shot at O’Brien, but probably guarantees you atleast Martin. Those are 2 players I would be extremely happy with.

Oh I’m sure if he could tarasenko compher holl Gustafsson would all be gone and probably a rasmussen chiarot to get more cap space, probably missing someone.

Lots of garbage

And yet he's the one who signed all those players to their current contracts. Maybe it's time to heed the phrase, "you get what you pay for" a little better.

Yeah theres a few guys that can help with that. I think long term McQueen might actually end up having more of the impact youre looking for than Martin. Bear is another option up front and obviously Aitcheson is probably the toughest in the draft.

They should have a shot at 2 of those 4, and they would all be good picks at that spot. I'm starting to think with it being less of a high talent draft, drafting some guys who can help with the identity of the team going forward with Kasper and Seider, that can also chip in is the play.

What are you giving up to move up 5 really important slots in the 1st round?

Wings can reinvent the bottom 6 pretty quickly IMO. Just need a couple of bangers to replace the under preforming "skilled players" that currently infect the bottom 6.

I think if aitcheson is there he is who the wings will take. He pretty much fits how we draft to a Tee. I’m a bit worried now though that he goes top 12 when there’s a run on defense. Martin is one of the best hitters and physical players in the draft. I wouldn’t say dirty but he’s just imposing. McQueen is an interesting case, I just don’t know with all his injury history if he would sort of become less physical as a way of protecting his longevity. I doubt he’s there at 13 anyways.

With Smith seemingly falling, I agree Aitcheson is unlikely to be there.

I think the most likely scenario is one of Eklund/Bear is there and that's who we take. Which I would not dislike at all.

We have no need for another eklund, and I don’t think he’s good enough to distinguish himself from his contemporaries at that ranking.

The FO always drafts high compete players, even Raymond can be pretty physical and in the thick of it at times. They clearly do not like players in the mold of Berggren. Kasper, edvinsson, seider, MBN. That’s a pretty damn physical core group of 2 way players. If you add an aitcheson to that then lookout. I need to mention Anaheim is also clearly building this way, with who they have added through trade and FA, and who they have drafted under verbeek. So there’s a bit of a pattern here. I think those that get excited about the idea of us drafting eklund will walk away pretty dissapointed, and at this point, our 1st round drafting has been very on point. So hard to be upset with our draft strategy.

This is a stupid trade.

9th overall + 13th overall + 3rd liner = #3 defenseman to you?

I think that's pretty much how Yzerman is building this team. Sort of a combination of Florida and Carolina. Like Florida, but with more of the star power on the D group and on the wing. That said, Martin is absolutely not going to be there.

This the guy you want for multiple first rounders?

I know he's on the small size, but from all accounts Eklund has a very high compete level.
