2025 DRAFT Discussion

Is there a day 1 prospect this year? (Misa/Frondell)

And what does a 'trade up' cost in the NHL? (13th pick ++++?)

Smaht Scouting - March 23rd: "If you were to rank this draft just on raw skill and pure fun factor Carbonneau would easily be a top 10 pick at the very least. At least once a game, Carbonneau will have a really eye-popping, high-end moment, but then he’ll disappear for long stretches at a time

Do you think this is what Yzerman looking in the first?

Pluses on Carbonneau; he’s exciting to watch, decently fast, decent size, great shot that’s one of the best in the draft in my opinion. Is good at funneling pucks to the net. Confident in his own abilities.

Downsides I’ve seen; His tools work great in the Q but there’s going to be a steep learning curve. He shows too much tunnel vision in trying to get pucks to the net and not enough patience. His defensive game is average at best. He loves going 1-on-2 or 1-on-3 too often and that’s not going to work in the AHL, let alone NHL. I’d like to see him score closer to the net more.

There’s a chance he’s a an Alex Ioffalo, Tyler Toffoli or Brock Boeser kind of secondary scorer. There’s also a good chance he’s AA or even a Zadina. I don’t see him developing a very strong ‘B’ game so I’d put him in the boom or bust category.

Is that worth more than the other kids in our range at 13?

I don’t see how he’s like AA or Zadina at all. If he is similar to anyone who has played for Detroit recently, it’s probably Sprong.

In a draft like this full of likely flawed players in our range, yes I would take a shot on him. But I understand I am higher on him than consensus. I do think it’s harder to evaluate players from the Q because the quality of competition is not as good.

Sprong might be a better comp than Zadina. I was just thinking high scoring Q wingers.

Why I mention AA is the plus level skills like stickhandling, shot and speed, but not making great game management choices, attempting to beat too many defenders, and not using his linemates enough.

I’m not low on him. I’m just noting that he’s got more risk of failure than other picks in our range.

Both Martin and Atchison are way overvalued and will be taken before they should and I chear for both of them go top 12. Hope McQueen also gone top 12

If Jackson Smith or Eklund available , it's no brainier to take one of those. Also Mrtka , but I believe he will be also gone.
If not than Hensler , Lakovic or Bear.

I hear a lot of people saying we should stop with the safe picks and try a homerun pick. We are picking 13th. Does this not qualify as a homerun pick? Assuming Martin is long gone I am likening Aitcheson because of toughness. Carboneau is on my radar though

Toughness and physicality with skill is a rare and valuable commodity in today’s NHL. That doesn’t make them undervalued. They provide dimensions that other prospects don’t.

As I’ve said plenty of times in the past, I have concerns with our North American scouting. I’d absolutely love to be able to say I no longer have those concerns, but I honestly can’t at this time. So if Eklund falls because he’s small and if our Euro scouts like him, I think I’m good with selecting him. I’d also be fine with selecting Filip Ekberg in the 2nd round as an undersized guy with skill.

I just don’t think we are going to thread the needle by finding a big, mean guy with skill who has been missed by the rest of the league. We have a whole lot of data that suggests we are not good at finding these guys. We are more likely to take a flier on a guy like Brady Cleveland far earlier than where he was projected to go.

Again, I wish it wasn’t like this, but I can’t delude myself into thinking we’ve got this figured out when we have lots of data that tells us otherwise.

Yes but those guys, Martin , Atchison and Eklund physically developed better now than for example Smith or Lakovic and they looking more attractive now. Still Smith and Lakovic have higher potential. There is also risks for getting another Zadina. Draper has a lot of inside information about Hensler, will see.
