2025 DRAFT Discussion

Could be a guy the Wings are higher on than we expect.

Haven’t made any attempts to watch him. I know he’s very young for this draft but he has the size and pedigree the Wings like.

How is his skating?

THW scouting report

“He has everything NHL teams value in a defenseman of his style, and he plays a premium position on the right side of the defense. Fiddler is a strong skater with great size, good on his pivots and a very effective defender.” – SMAHT Scouting

Neutral zone report - Fiddler

10/10 if I get a RHD it’s Fiddler over Mrtka.

Kind of where I am starting to land when looking at both of them.

If you’re looking at big defensemen, pick the one that plays with an identity. Fiddler is physical, a worker, and is improving his offensive game.

You won’t get big points from Fiddler but a guy like Tanev on this current Detroit team instead of Holl and they’re in the playoffs.

Do you have any thoughts on Hensler? He doesn’t do much for me.
Strong transition player, not sure what he becomes if this is it. Older guy for his draft year, he improved over the season at Wisconsin, but again I like that Fiddler has an identity. I am not sure Hensler has enough to be a PP guy and where does that leave a two way D-man that doesn't project to me as a shutdown type. I am worried about him getting caught out at his blueline a few times I watched him, ill-advised walks, not getting shots through. I think if he can round his game you get a Jake McCabe type if he ramps up the physicality, he is kind of a passenger at times. He has got good skating but I wanted to see more especially for a top 15 pick slot. He could do it and put it all together, I certainly don't want him at 13.

There’s a lot of these generic types in this draft. It’s made it hard for me to be excited about the class as a whole.

Eklund - I expect a Benson-like slide due to size. He’s legit though. Notice Frondell couldn’t get shit done at the U18s without him? And Benson is the guy I think I’d compare him to most. He’s got solid game management and puck protection skills and a real knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Bear - the Achilles injury will scare many but this kid is a pitbull with skill. I think he’s a Cole Sillinger at worst. At best a Seth Jarvis? We could all be happy with that.

Aitcheson - I’m still hoping he’s available and ready to cause carnage from our blue line. The offense won’t be there at the next level to the same degree as it is in junior. He’s got the makings of a nasty 3/4/5 defender. I can see him moonlight at forward a bit like Byfuglien because of his crash and bang style. A lot of people see Trouba in his game.

Carbonneau - I think there’s good but not great skill here. Good but not great compete. Lots of junior level tendencies and lots of future growing pains. He could become a good 25-25-50 winger.
I think Eklund is a little bigger than Benson is but he plays noticeably bigger as well. If he falls, the wings are probably running to the podium for him. I like Martin but I'm not sure you can convince me hes better than Eklund

Achilles is the only reason hes likely possible but yeah your description isnt too bad. I think hes got a much grittier game than either of those guys though. Jarvis and Sillinger have some power aspects to their game, I dont know that I would say they make a team hard to play against physically necessarily though compared to someone that plays the way Bear does. There was a tweet going around about top prospect per 60 rates, and Bears were really good in all areas

If Aitcheson isnt available, it means that someone else has fallen. He might actually be the perfect pick for Detroit though all things considered

not adverse to taking a big rugged good skating power forward that can fight but doesnt have talent at 13 , the outlook being shoot for highest odds of succesfully adding an important long term peice even if its bottom half roster . same with a big rugged pk'ing dman . create a playoff team = need size n physicality because the energy levels and speed of game are raised and amongst that enviroment theres fewer seams for the small forwards to find , it becomes more of a power game . and i dont want small forwards getting bodied off the rink

And who would that be.....?
I don't think it really exists in the first round of this draft outside of possibly McQueen, but on D it screams Aitcheson. Nesbitt could become that, but right now he's not much of a fighter.

I do think Martin, Bear, McQueen, and possibly Carbonneau/Nesbitt are all guys with a legit chances of Detroit drafting at forward that would make them legitimately harder to play against. This might be a draft for identity more than for a super high end player.

I guess McQueen has talent though so it doesnt fit now that I reread the post you're replying to lol

13 is a little high for fiddler, same with nesbitt, if we are going for identity over high impact (which I’m fine with in this specific draft) then we should just try and trade back. Or we could just take aitcheson, which I find is still the most likely outcome. The only significant move I could see us taking and it’s a big risk but it is trading up a few spots for McQueen but I highly doubt that happens. Martin will not be there at 13.

Agree in spirit, but I think it is the wrong way to go in this particular yr. The 2nd round this yr basically starts almost immediately after 20th OA. Massive flaws and question marks in the late 1st. And that pulp is roughly 30-40 players who are projects, it drags deep into the 2nd rd. IMO the likelihood of taking part in that crap shoot with an extra bullet and still not hitting is too high. Though I really like Daniil Prokhorov i do not want a project like that being our #1 selection.

Make the pick or trade it for a top6 or a top4.

I think Zharovsky goes in the first when it's all said and done.

What do people think of Filip Ekberg? He's undersized and didn't do well in the OHL, but had a strong U18 tournament. Some have complained about his usage on the Ottawa 67's. Would you take him, and if so in what round? FWIW central scouting has him ranked 178th.

Worth a second. Might be a steal. Might be a Jurco.

For now I’ve decided on Aitcheson and West for my first two picks. That’s if Martin goes early. Eklund might alter things

Id consider him with the 44th pick or would package the 2 3rds + to move up 20ish spots if he’s there. I heard a podcast where he was apparently sick and not 100% in his ohl season and wouldn’t work out with his teammates

I think there’s something potentially there and would draft him
