2025 DRAFT Discussion

If the player we want is off the board at 12 i would call Philly and try to trade 12 for 24 and 25.

Not in this draft. The value of players after about 18 drops to 3rd round quality in an average draft class. This year is shallower than a gene pool in a Louisiana trailer park.

I’d rather turn the pick into a trade for Konecny or a top 4 defenseman.

Oh mighty Hockey Gods…

Grant thy mercy upon Hockeytown, and let the ping-pong balls bounce in Yzerman’s favor.
Deliver unto the Detroit Red Wings the #2 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Let it be a defensive phenom… or a goal-scoring machine with silky mitts and a mullet worthy of McCarty.

🙏 In Lidstrom’s name we pray,
Amen.

If Yzerman drafts Marin, then it makes sense that Danielsson would be used as trade bait to return a more sure fire offensive winger. I am looking at Lakovic, but I think it would make more sense to pick Martin, then trade Danielsson for a more polished 'Lakovic'.

Don't get me wrong, I like Danielsson, but I think with the emergence of Kasper looking like a #2 with junk yard dog tendencies, that would make Nate expendable if DRWs scouts think Martin could have that Larkin -type future, which Nate does not.

Wings could have a deep top 9 center depth, while not having any superstar centers. While not ideal, you can make up for that with really good PMD defense and high octane wingers. Wings really need ASP to pan out. Then need two more bottom 4 strong dmen (manageable by good UFA signings if Wallinder and/or Buim don't amount to much).

I do see a path for this team becoming a contender without superstar centers. Yzerman will need to make some savvy trades.

I'm sure you'll have ppl after you for even considering to trade danielson

Or just buy them in free agency. Can't get more "high octane" than Marner.

If the team is gonna contend without superstar centers, they should keep Danielson because they'll need the depth.

Wait, what…?

You want to trade Danielson. A guy that would be top 5 in this year’s draft. Probably top 5 in last year’s draft. For a less proven offensive winger prospect ranked in the teens in a much, much worse draft. Because they’d drafted Martin. A scrappy player ranked in the middle of the first round of this very mediocre looking draft.

If they draft Nesbitt he probably gets penciled in as a 3c in our core. People wouldn’t be thrilled with that but outside of the top 10 I just don’t see a ton of potential. I think it’s a pretty weak draft. I think If people are getting themselves excited thinking we can get a ASP level talent past 10 in this years draft they will come away disappointed. We will be drafting a role player unless someone falls, and that’s okay.
Nah, they aren't penciling anyone in for anything at this point. This kid will have zero impact on this roster for the next four years. The logic behind taking him is that we need higher-end centers in the organization. To get that you need to take kids who: (i) actually project as centers, and (ii) hope that one of them (Kasper, Danielson, Finnie, yadda) out develop everyone's expectations. We absolutely need to keep drafting centers. No one is going to trade us a good one and no good ones are making it to free agency on a consistent basis.

Top 5 in every draft but his own

Did a lot of driving this weekend, and listened to a bunch of podcasts that did deep dives on a lot of these players in our range.

Here are a few thoughts:

-I really like Lakovic and Carbonneau as options for us. These guys have flaws, but I think they have higher upside than a bunch of these other options we have in our projected range. I am really intrigued by Carbonneau with his combo of scoring, skill, and physicality. On the HP podcast they call him a “power sniper”.

-Desnoyers sounds overrated to me and I would not be surprised if he takes a tumble on draft night. Could see him sliding out of the top 10.

-It sucks that Bear got injured because I think he would have been a slam dunk/no brainer pick for us.

-I am cooling off on McQueen. I understand the appeal of this player with his frame, hands, and shooting ability. But the back injury combined with a lack of playmaking ability is concerning for me.

My shortlist would probably be Eklund, O‘Brien, Smith, Lakovic, Carbonneau, Aitcheson

If they are comfortable with Bear being able to heal properly, he would be the other name I throw in there.

Do…do we actually agree on a prospect list? After 5 years?

Two guys with talent that don't have the IQ and drive to go with the talent

His team wouldn't be that good without him. My opinion.

Maybe? Hoping for full potential.

McQueen is on a no draft for me. Don't want to waste a pick.

I understand the arguments against for both. I think in a draft like this, it comes down to what bets are you ok with making. And for me, I think they are bets I would make. Especially with where we are picking.

It’s funny because I think Carbonneau has plenty of passion, but maybe not IQ. And Lakovic has very little urgency. They said on the HP podcast about Lakovic “it’s like he has no idea how good he could be”. That could be scary or could be enticing, depends how you look at it. I would guess Detroit would be more interested in Carbonneau, of the two, but also could see them not liking either.

It’s kind of like with this draft you have to pick what flaws you are ok with, for whoever you are talking about.

Yes.

But, I'm hoping the Detroit range includes a few more players.

I think this is a hard draft to navigate. I could see with the issues of Carbonneau and Lakovic, it pushing you toward a “safer” guy like Martin, and I would understand that. I wouldn’t mind Martin, I just would prefer these guys I think are a little bit more of a home run swing.

When it comes to Desnoyers, it’s not a question of if he makes his team better. It’s what does he do that will translate well to the NHL level? What does he do at a plus level? And from everything I heard, people had a hard time coming up with an answer to that.

I do think with him they talked about him being a great leader and a great work ethic, so he will probably be one of these guys who squeezes every drop possible out of his development. That might be what redeems him.

It is.

Unless Detroit gets "that guy"(whoever that is).

As far as Desnoyers goes, he's a solid pick to be a very useful NHLer. He's also got decent talent. Solid #3 center is a low end IMO.
