2025 DRAFT Discussion

I wanted Savoie in 2022 and Benson in 2023. Wings needed offense, and I thought they were more likely to hit. That said, had Yzerman not signed the poor FAs or the Wings not won a few meaningless games, we could have had a shot at Michkov or Leonard.

Time will tell if Kasper and Danielson exceed expectations. ASP was a great pick and the Wings didn’t have much choice with MBN.
I mean I'm pretty sure I know whose burner account this is, but what's the impetus for making one?

If people feel like we need to add more scoring, I think it is worthwhile to discuss this kid who has scored 71 goals over the last 2 years. EP and Craig Button are both really high on him.

Ideally I would like to add a forward with size, and not an undersized kid like this, but I think if we are drafting 10-15 it would be worth considering him as an option. His shot is phenomenal. The way he can score from bad angles and with a lightning quick release is both fun to watch and pretty rare. I think the question with him, like any smaller goal scorer, is going to be can he be effective at even strength at the pro level, or when the game ramps up in intensity.

Cameron has remained my pick since the middle of the season. Our version of Cole Caufield would be huge.

Lmao just seen ducks blew a 2-0 lead and lost late .. perfect ending to the season , pens, ducks blowing leads late and us winning games we shouldn’t have down the stretch

So I watched some of Jackson Smith and Radim Mrtka this weekend. I fully expected to like Mrtka better, but I liked Smith significantly more.

Mrtka is extremely vanilla to me. Don't really see what he excels at outside of being bigger than everyone. I thought with how productive he was this year he would have some things that pop in his game, but I just didn't really see it.

I am shocked in a draft like this Jackson Smith is/was ranked #10 by Mckenzie. I would draft a defenseman with his skill set and frame every day of the week. He is so impactful with the puck on his stick and leading a rush, it is incredible. I would be really excited if Detroit were to draft this kid.

We're going to be at 10-12 ... I think Eklund or one of the left shot D (Smith/Aitcheson) might be there for us and be the pick.

General question for the amateur scouts here: with the selection of Max Plante, do you think the Red Wings are at a point in their rebuild where they are willing to take more risks on offensive guys who are a departure from our typical focus on 2-way, 200 foot forwards?

They did draft Mastrosimone who was a shoot-first, defense is optional prospect in 2019, and Amadeus Lombardi in the 4th round in 2022, so they've selected guys with skill in the past. I just wonder if this is a once every few drafts lottery ticket, or whether you think they may start to prioritize skill now that they have a solid nucleus of 200 foot guys with Kasper, Danielson, MBN, etc?

hopefully we’re at that point

If the goal is to built a team with certain identity, then most of the draft capital is spent on players that represent that identity. Since not all of them are making in NHL in the first place. Buch/Lombardi-type picks remain in the minority.

came across a YouTube video scouching mock draft ... decided to check the wings pick, Cullen potter ... it’s too bad cause I think Yzerman should take him caused he’d help danielson and Kasper’s offends etc... go search him ... 5’9 🤣 ya f*** that shit

Kasper’s about to hit 20 without Frodo in search of his precious

Yzermans comments at the trade deadline presser seem to be going under the radar imo. They are looking for really physical guys with skill to round out the team.
I would be very, very happy with Aitcheson, but realistically he won't be a truly functional NHL player for four or five years. No one we take this year fixes any immediate holes on our roster.

Well hopefully they can be a big player for us in 3-5 yrs so we can sustain and be good for a longtime if some of our other prospects hit

Or we make a move with the pick. Either way I have no interest in wasting the pick on a suRe nhler that becomes a bottom 6/pair guy

Out of curiosity if we’re picking 10 and we can get a eklund desnoyers Hagens or whomever it is that falls at 7 would we trade the 10th pick +2nd and a 3rd to move up 3 spots?

Cause I would ... got enough prospects might as well use some picks to add another top end prospect

Mrtka is a guy that looks like an all-tools-no-toolbox player. And history shows that the majority of this type of player stays that way. Above average abilities but below average brains gets you a Rasmussen Ristolainen or Ben Chiarot.

I am not sure if he is an all tools guy? I mean I don't really see the tools aside from the height. For some reason I was thinking he would look more dynamic.

Not sure if he lacks IQ/brains or not. I think he is probably just a steady guy that can log minutes and move the puck, which has value, it's just that nothing really pops in his game.

I wouldn’t call Mastrosimone shoot first just because he had more goals than assists in Chicago.he was well rounded when I saw him and I thought he could have been a better NCAA player than his numbers showed.

I think the problem with Mastro is he peaked super early and could never move beyond that plateau. The same could be said of Niederbach, Hanas and Grewe. Those guys never developed anything after being drafted.

Great size
Above average skating for his size
Ok puck handling
Average to above average shot power
Average to above average passer
Low shot accuracy
Low panic threshold
Not as physical as you want a 6’6” defenseman to be
Reactionary defense instead of anticipatory defense
good at simple plays but can’t read the developing plays

I think a team is going to reach for him as a project. There’s always at least one guy like him per draft and I don’t think there’s a super high success rate for them.

Not all of them have had a chance to show what they are at the NHL level so you can’t just fully judge without seeing as most are starting to hit the NHL in the next couple years. Could they do better? Absolutely, but you can’t just say all they got was Trey when they’ve gotten much more than that
I was talking about just the first 2 drafts, but even if you include '21 along with '20 and '19, at best you have a 3rd pair D in Wallinder and a 4th liner in Mazur.

I'm holding out hope for Buch, Lombardi, and Finnie, those are the kind of picks I want to see.

(Note: We're talking about 2nd round and later, because someone's bound to mention Seider, lol)

We are drafting 12ish, not 3rd OA. If you are expecting a first line/top pair prospect, you will be disappointed.
