2025 DRAFT Discussion

I only mentioned the names that showed up in the draft discussion a lot so it doesn't sound like total hindsight drafting. Out of all of them I believe Peterka was mentioned the most and Faber a distant second. Evangelista was definitely discussed, don't remember any of the other ones. Wallinder was in the discussion before he was drafted, I don't remember anyone clamoring for Neiderbach or Hanas.

But the point is.... 3 picks in the second, 2 picks in the third, 2 picks in the fourth, and 2 picks in the seventh, and all we get is Kienan Draper, who will more than likely be cleaning out the zamboni trough after he graduates.

That's garbage drafting. 2020 looks like it was a decent draft class. The Wings drafting was so bad that draft that ANY ONE OF US WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER. Even NorissNick. You can't do worse than zero. That's horrendous.
poor kienan 😂 ... I was pushing for raymond for months so I know we would have come out with Raymond and peterka so I should get an nhl shot if Kyle dweebass can get 50 million for being a horrible gm

I feel like the last 3 drafts have looked better for later rounds compared to 19-21, at least early on.
Frk It was the biggest proponent for Necas on HFBoards, he's just arguing for the sake of argument, lol.

I think Stevie has a solid track record as far as 1st rounders, but past the first round, he's not even league average because of the extra picks he had. It would look worse without the Hakan special in Soderblom. I though Buch and Plante were solid picks though for the second round, and I'm still holding out hope for Lombardi and Finnie. Everyone else like Mazur, they're 4th liners or 3rd pair D.

If the probability is low anyways, I'd rather swing for the fence than trying to bunt my way to first.

I mean… in your analysis, it’s the first 2 years that were clear misses … before Yzerman got there. I’d easily take Yzerman’s 19-23 picks over “the boards.”

And the fascination with the Sabres undersized forwards continues to baffle me. There’s literally no one in the league who would take Savoie over Kasper right now.

2020 draft is shaping up to be a disaster aside from Ray.

I've done that exercise before and it's hard to prove because...it's the internet...but yes, most of the time I was just as wrong as Detroit, but I've been right probably just as often as they have.

I wanted Necas in 2017, but was also OK taking Liljegren or Vilardi. 2/3 of those would have been a way better pick. Here's a link proving that: Prospect Info: - 2017 Draft

2020 I wanted Peterka. Post-Game Talk: - World Junior Championships 2020 in the Czech Republic: Canada Wins 2020 Gold.

2018, would have taken Dobson or Bouchard. Not Hughes, but better than Z. Prospect Info: - 2018 NHL Draft

Those are some examples I can find evidence of on these boards. Way back in the day I wanted Kucherov as well but don't think I posted about that here. Anyway, I was also wrong all the time - I wanted Kirby Dach in 2019 - but my point is that if I can have so many "hits" as a random dude on an internet forum who basically just reads scouting reports and watches highlights and formulates a "vibe" on these players... it's kind of sad that NHL teams can't do 1000x better than me.
I wanted Dobson as well that year but I don’t think anyone was complaining when zadina fell to 6 ... just our luck he sucked

Pushed for Kasper for months as well ..... I wanted Matthew wood over danielson so we’ll have to wait and see and I admit I was upset and wanted wallstedt over Cossa but again as bad as wallstedt is looking it’s way too early and Cossa hasn’t impressed me much lately either

did Yzerman bring enough toughness with Seider , Edvinsson, Kasper, Mazur and MBN? Do we have enough skilled guys like Raymond, ASP, Plante, Danielson , Lombardi and Buchelnikov .
Do we need more speed other than Buchelnikov, Lombardi, Danielson and Kasper.
What do we need to improve : speed, toughness or skills?

We need 100 point centers and 80 point d-men. Who do you think we should draft to fill these needs?

As it stands, this season there are two 100 point centers (McDavid is at 97 cause of missed time) and one 80 point defenseman (Q Hughes missed time). These players are rare unless you've hit the jackpot, which we are not winning at this point

I'd rather just fill our roster out a la 2014 LA Kings or 2019 Blues

I wasn't serious, but thanks for that.

I guess that's not asking for much, needing multiple of each... ;)
Recent cup winners' counts: 100 point centers, 80 point d-men - (actual leading points center, defenseman)

2024 Florida: 0, 0 - (94, 39)
2023 Vegas: 0, 0 - (66, 54)
2022 Colorado: 0, 1 - (88, 86)
2021 TBL: 0, 0 - (48, 45)
2020 TBL: 0, 0 - (66, 55)
2019 St Luis: 0, 0 - (77, 41)
2018 Caps: 0, 0 - (83, 68)

Had to go look, since I am procrastinating yard work. 🤣

Thank you!!!

This isn’t the 80s or early 90s. Scoring is dropping. Refs call 3 penalties per game now.. there’s 32 teams in the league (and unfortunately talking of expanding to 34 or more for those juicy expansion fees).

If a guy is a 50-60 point forward or 35-40 point defenseman that’s a really good outcome.

Outside of the first round, this team can't even manage 35 - 40 pt forwards, much less defensemen. Heck, Kane is the only UFA signing to reach 35 pts, that's really sad.

I hope they draft someone that can score.

Tarasenko got 40 goals though 12 yrs ago . If we close our eyes and tap our feet I’m sure he can get there once more

Meh , sabres and pens lost . Can’t do better than what 10? Realistically likely 11-12 We should have lost at least 1 or 2 games for a legit shot at 7

At this point I couldn’t care less about the draft and willing to deal it at the draft unless someone crazy drops to us draft day which I doubt

we all luv the brady bunch :D , but being only 175 as a physical player put me off him so early in draft when theres two players with size n scoring there . but hes young and maybe bulks up to 195 and becomes a menace cuz this guy is an awesome hockey player :

#3 : NYGARD-MARTIN-MAZUR

If people feel like we need to add more scoring, I think it is worthwhile to discuss this kid who has scored 71 goals over the last 2 years. EP and Craig Button are both really high on him.

Ideally I would like to add a forward with size, and not an undersized kid like this, but I think if we are drafting 10-15 it would be worth considering him as an option. His shot is phenomenal. The way he can score from bad angles and with a lightning quick release is both fun to watch and pretty rare. I think the question with him, like any smaller goal scorer, is going to be can he be effective at even strength at the pro level, or when the game ramps up in intensity.

That's not all that great considering the team had so many extra 2nd rounders. 6 of them in Stevie's first 2 drafts, and we get a 3rd pair D out of all that? That's below average hit rate. Imagine if we picked Peterka instead of Wallinder (there were multiple people here that wanted the kid), EVangelista or Faber.

Drafting past the first round is definitely subpar.
Not all of them have had a chance to show what they are at the NHL level so you can’t just fully judge without seeing as most are starting to hit the NHL in the next couple years. Could they do better? Absolutely, but you can’t just say all they got was Trey when they’ve gotten much more than that
