I think you just stay at 7 and see who’s there. You’re still getting really good player out of this. Desnoyers could go before Philly as well.

NHL mock drafts hint at Blackhawks’ game-changing third-overall pick

Anyone got a clue of who the Chicago Blackhawks will snag with the third-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft? Well, two notable outlets may clue us in on who could end up wearing a red sweater come draft day, and hopefully provide another solid puzzle piece to this seemingly perpetually rebuilding team.

This is assuming, of course, the Hawks stay in the No. 3 spot, as they should. While Matthew Schaefer and Michael Misa look like the surefire No. 1 and No. 2 picks, it doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of potentially NHL-ready talent behind them. Or, talent that will become NHL-ready sooner rather than later.

Let’s explore three players who the Hawks can take based on three mock drafts - one of the outlets I selected had two mocks going on - and which player would be the best of the trio.

Tankathon - Porter Martone, RW​

Porter Martone may be my favorite prospect in this draft class. So, if Tankathon’s mock is spot on, then I’ll be one to say the Blackhawks landed a future star. Martone’s size, 6’3, 207 lbs is already built for the big leagues, and he has a relatively early birthday, meaning his body is more mature than some of the younger players in this draft class.

And his productivity is among the best of those in 2025, with 98 points and 37 goals in 57 games. There’s no way I’d personally take anyone else over Martone should he (most likely) be available at No. 3.

NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman - Jake O’Brien, C​

Shifting gears to Adam Kimelman and Mike G. Morreale, we got two distinct picks, starting with Jake O’Brien from Kimelman. O’Brien, much like Martone, displays playmaker potential, evidenced with his 66 assists, which equated to one assist per game.

He finished the year with 98 points, giving him 32 on the season, and an NHL equivalent, per Tankathon, of 39 points. Considering how bad the Blackhawks have been, that’s not a bad number. Also like Martone, O’Brien has the length to compete already, even if he’s lacking in overall size, weighing just 170 lbs.

NHL.com’s Mike G. Morreale - James Hagens, C​

Hagens wouldn’t be a bad choice, but he’d be my last pick on this list of three players. At 5’11, 176 lbs, his size isn’t bad, but productivity is where I’m concerned. I can’t see him factoring in as another Macklin Celebrini, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he saw no NHL action in 2025-26, or at least until the end of the year.

For this one, it’s all about how long the Blackhawks are willing to wait. Are they okay to go another year without seeing immediate returns on another high pick, much as they were with Artyom Levshunov?

If the answer is yes, I’d feel better about Hagens. But if the Hawks want a more immediate return, Martone and O’Brien may be the better picks. This is assuming, of course, they don’t reassign them to juniors.

With Desnoyers playing in the Memorial Cup as Moncton's best player his stock is rising every day as is probably gone before #7 is the feeling I get. Recency bias and all that.

Look at Brady Martin. No one was talking about him a month ago. Then he goes and dominates weak competition at the U18s and suddenly he's the bell of the ball.

My question on this topic is: when do they do the pull ups? Is it after a bunch of other strenuous test and they are exhausted or is it in the beginning of the day. My old saggy ass can still crank off a few, and I don’t do much in the way of exercise. Very hard to believe a kid that looks like that young man in the picture can’t manage at least 10 if he was fresh.

little bit of a rough game for Desnoyers yesterday. First game of Moncton`s I`ve watched from start to finish but you can see why he`s so highly thought of

Really liked our boy Johansson, not sure how many hits he was credited for but used his big frame really well, moves reasonably well too, might be a gem found in what? Round 6/7?

So again and again take more and more 3-4th liners….how many more years to understand that take premium talent to win ??? 1 cup in 53 years

My question on this topic is: when do they do the pull ups? Is it after a bunch of other strenuous test and they are exhausted or is it in the beginning of the day. My old saggy ass can still crank off a few, and I don’t do much in the way of exercise. Very hard to believe a kid that looks like that young man in the picture can’t manage at least 10 if he was fresh.

Chin ups are a matter of muscle balance (strength and muscle familiarity are a given)

If you’re a hockey player, you’re more likely to favor your lower half than your top, so you’re asking you’re weaker upper half to lift your denser heavier lower half



If Desnoyers falls to 7, I’ll be doing cartwheels. Kid is going to be a player.

I’m toying between JOB and Martin myself. ...Martin seems to establish and identity and tone, which I really like. His ceiling feels like it could be ~62 points on a first line, but a total game changer that rises to the occasion. I think in the Marek interview, they said his work ethic is like no other, and that he’s used to grinding in the farm, putting in a morning shift before scoring a hatty. He doesn’t have formal trainers, thrives with more work, and wasn’t on a great team this year. Some have said on here that all players work hard and ethic doesn’t matter, but to me that spells someone will flourish in the NHL as prospects ranked that high already have better opportunities. JOB doesn’t seem to set an identity as much, but brings more of a skill approach to our chemistry.

Eklund is really talented, I’d be happy with him, but would go for one of the centers first. We need a bonfire top 6 middle in the pipeline. I feel as if a majority of Eklunds action seems to stem from poor coverage around the net and below the dot, which coming from a larger sheet to a smaller sheet worries me about the transition of having less space/time. I’m sure he’ll be great in a few years.

Martin may be too chaotic. He beats to his own drum and I wonder can he actually play within a NHL system. He isn’t that big at 6Ft. so those thumps may not be as effective in the NHL with elite skaters, which he is not. He has speed, edge control is a bit awkward. The highest I have seen him ranked is 12. If you take all the rankings he averages out at 17. If they truly want him they could trade back a few picks maybe 8 - 10 and see if they could bag another 2nd

I get the understanding Eklund is 5’11 and possibly could struggle without international ice but he is already playing against men and former NHLers. His skating is elite. He plays a very mature system game and he works his wonders within that system and much like Martin hounds the puck. He may need a year just to get some weight on, but he has all the tools. All rankings average he still comes out at 7. At worst I think he puts up numbers similar to his brother, but I think he is more offensively gifted.
