2025 Draft Boards

On Realguds draft I picked Mrtka, West, Rombach, Phillips, and Prokhorov with my first five. That makes West the runt of the group I think.

Second round
Milton Gastrin, Amico Carter,
Behm, Eric Nilson, Barnhill,

Gastrin is going in the 1st. Nilson earlier than 44. I'd have np moving up for a nilson

Be nice to have assets we wanted to get rid of and teams actually gave us 2nds instead of us giving away 2nds to move players

Maybe if were lucky a desperate team gives us a 2nd for Rasmussen. Or we can always take a 1 yr cap dump for one

Is Mrtka's stock dropping for some reason?

A few weeks ago that guy was top 10 in every draft I saw, and top 5 in many.
Will have to see Bob’s final list to say for sure, but I don’t think so.

I think he will be the 2nd defenseman off the board if I had to guess, and I think NHL teams will like him.

  1. Schaeffer
  2. Misa
  3. Desnoyer (This guy seems like he's got the "it" factor. He just wins.)
  4. Martone
  5. Martins
  6. Eklund
  7. Hagens (I'm going to catch flak for this but I was not super impressed, nor did I ever watch him thinking that's what a top 3 or top 5 pick looks like.)
  8. O'Brien
  9. Bear
  10. Aitcheson
  11. McQueen (Love the skillset. Still think he's a winger at the pro level.)
  12. Carbonneau
  13. Frondell (Aside from size, there isn't anything he did better than Eklund.)
  14. Lakovic
  15. Fiddler
  16. Cootes
  17. Hensler
  18. Mrtka
  19. Reschny
  20. Potter
  21. Reid
  22. Kindell
  23. Schmidt
  24. Horcoff
  25. Smith (@Rzombo4 prez said it best. He reminds me of Broberg. I hated Broberg at the draft.)
  26. Trethaway (I think he's got it in him to be a really solid 4/5/6 guy that excels on the PK)
  27. Boumedienne
  28. Moore
  29. Zharovsky
  30. Vansaghi
  31. Gastrin
  32. Spence (I debated dropping him to the 2nd round. I just see too much heads down hockey in his game.)

I think teams look at him and say, "he skates well for his size." and fall in love with him because he's big. But he's not very physical. His shot isn't very good. And his IQ is average-ish? I think the floor for him is Jamie Oleksiak. The ceiling is Tyler Myers. But not the calder winning Tyler Myers. The chaos giraffe that chases plays all day in Vancouver Tyler Myers.

He's going to play 21 minutes a night but you're going to want more.

When I make lists like this for fun, I tend to go for the guys who I think have the most upside.

But truth be told, if it was my ass on the line, and I wanted to make sure I was getting a guy who plays in the NHL for a long time, I would probably have Mrtka higher.

I get that. And I agree that Mrtka will be a player, but I just think he's going to be a very uninspiring #4 that, when you look at the draft 10 years from now you're wondering why he was a top 10 and a guy like Eklund or Cootes or Bear fell out of the top 10.

I can't ever imagine Mrtka being PP1, and I debate if he's even got PP2 upside in the NHL. So he might be a 20-21 minute a night, 20-25 point defender that takes up a lot of space. But you're going to wish he was more than that.

It really is a bad class for defensemen.

I see it similarly, which is why I had him #16. I kept thinking I wanted to try to put him higher, but I just liked a number of guys better.

I think his point totals have given some people some false hopes about how much offense is there. I was expecting to see something in his game stand out more when I watched him aside from his size.

But he's just... solid.

I would say a realistic comp for him is Brandon Carlo. Optimisic is Travis Sanheim.

Yeah, those are probably better comps. And also guys I don't consider taking before 15 in a draft. (Even considering Sanheim once hit 44 points as the default #1 on a really shit team. He's a #3 at best on an average team.)

I like the different opinions, for the most part I don't think there is anything too crazy. This is the kind of draft where you are going to get less consensus than usual, IMO.

Only thing I would push back on is never thinking Hagens looks like a top3/5 pick.... Unless you were asleep for the entire U18's last year.

I like that you put Aitcheson at #10, it would be so much fun to watch him play for us if he continues to develop like I think he can.

What is wrong with Mrtka? I believe he's second best defansman in this draft

Is this a sim or a ranking, because I'd probably shit myself if we got Frondell at 13.

This is my personal ranking. I'm not that high on Frondell and think that his production was more a result of playing with Eklund instead of the other way around.

Fair, though he's kinda heralded as a two way guy, isn't he?

I thought I saw a comparison to either a Barkov or Kopitar type?

The U18s last year are just that; last year. He was terrific in that, no doubt. I was very high on him at the start of the year as a result. Then whenever I had the opportunity to watch him the flaws in his game became very apparent. Hagens is very much a perimeter player. He's a good skater but it's not at the same level as a Hughes brother to accommodate for his small size.

I think he's got a relatively safe floor as a second line scorer but I don't think he's going to be a true NHL superstar scoring threat like many expected after the U18s. There's some dynamism missing from his game that I think prevents that. At least for now. Right now he looks like a less skilled Logan Cooley.
