I have a fun blockbuster idea. It's probably a pie-in-the-sky idea. Let me preface this by saying this is the bones of the proposal, and certainly not what the entire package could look like from both sides. There's been some chatter the Isles could be willing to move down, the Sharks want Schaefer, and the obvious fit that Hagens is a Long Island kid.
We've also seen rumors such as the Blackhawks being interested in a blockbuster with Buffalo that would include Byram and Peterka. I don't know how much I trust that particular source.
The Islanders have sort of flat-lined the past couple years. They are basically an average team of the past couple years that just had a #1 pick fall into their lap.
So let's get to it: it's obvious the Blackhawks need a legitimate star-caliber forward to play with Bedard. They need to get him some help and make the game fun for him again. We could draft a forward at #3, but it will be a minimum of a year (or final eight games of this year) until Bedard and said player touch the ice together. I don't want to wait any longer.
Barzal is a target that has been discussed. I would not trade #3 for Barzal straight up. However, Noah Dobson is a RFA. He's very good. Would it make any sense for the Blackhawks to package the 3OA pick in addition to a defensive prospect like Korchinski or Allan to get the conversations started to get BOTH Barzal and Dobson? In theory, the Islanders could hold onto the #1 pick, also land #3, and replace a very good forward and a very good defenseman with Schaefer (#1), Hagens (#3), and then potentially a secondary asset like Allan or Korchinski. This would give NYI a chance to sort of re-set the clock a little bit. Dobson and Barzal are in their primes, respectively, but you potentially extend your window once you do become good if Schaefer and Hagens become stars. The crux of it is that Barzal for #3 is a reach, but maybe including some D we feel expendable while adding Dobson to the fold would balance things out a bit. This would also obviously hinge on a Dobson extension. Before I get flamed for the idea, it's just to get the conversation started. Lou isn't in charge anymore, but this is an organization that also traded a prime Devon Toews for two 2nds.
Barzal-Bedard as the Vancouver-guys connection and a D core moving forward of Dobson, Vlasic, Levshunov, and Rinzel sounds pretty filthy. A man can dream.
