2025 26 Roster…too Soon

The idea a collection of crap (Murphy + Dickinson) or Korchinski is going to get you 23 yr old established NHL top 6 LW/RW (He can play both sides) is fantasy

An offer sheet for Peterka will net Sabres 2026 1st + 2nd + 3rd so that is established value that you need to consider in perimeters of trade at least

Be bold and make trade to guarantee 8th year

To :sabres
D Wyatt Kaiser (RFA)
Hawks 2026 1st (Unprotected)

To :hawks
J.J. Peterka (8 x $9M)

- Sabres get 22 yr old top 4 LD and 2026 Hawks 1st unprotected (Can use as trade chip or make their own 2026 pick a trade chip if they desire)

- Hawks get an NHL established young core piece to put with Bedard, Nazar, Lev, Rinzel, 3rd overall pick this year and others down pipe

It also clears up our LD jam a bit by moving out Kaiser

Vlasic-Rinzel
Del Mastro-Levshunov
Korchinski-Murphy
(Crevier)

Allan in AHL or used as trade chip in another deal (TB possibly for Howard?)

No interest in trading our unprotected first whatsoever

wait what? you wanna give up potentially McKenna for Peterka?

This team could end up bottom 5 again without injuries, and with any significant injuries, especially in net, this team would very likely be bottom 2-3 again, so giving up McKenna equity is not worth it. Go make a move for Isaac Howard with the extra draft capital if the alternative is trading an unprotected 2026 1st in a deal for Peterka

if Peterka regresses at all to the 50-55 point range (career avg is ~52 pts per) then thats a deal you're getting smoked on, and you likely need to pay 7-8m to keep him long term...not giving up McKenna equity to do that

We offered "Hagen" for Demidov last year, Did you support that?

How has the "Tank for Hagen" or "Fail for Hagen" stuff worked out? Oh yeah Hagen is now 3rd-6th ranked prospect depending on prospect board

I would look at moving that pick and Kaiser as not of great loss to Hawks future given what we have now and what we have in coming down line

How things would look if we made this trade

Hawks would still be setup well draft wise even moving that pick including 3rd overall this year + 25th overall (Leafs pick)

At NHL/AHL level Hawks would have

C Connor Bedard (2023 1st round)
C Frank Nazar (2022 1st round)
C Oliver Moore (2023 1st round)
W J.J. Peterka (Via this trade)
RW Colton Dach
C Ryan Green
D Alex Vlasic
D Sam Rinzel (2022 1st round)
D Artyom Levshunov (2024 1st round)
D Kevin Korchinski (2022 1st round)
D Nolan Allan (2021 1st round)
D Ethan Del Mastro
G Spencer Knight (2019 1st round)
G Drew Commesso

Among others to build around

We also have in pipeline decent amount of young talent not in NHL or AHL at this point

C Sacha Boisvert (1st round 2024)
LW Marek Vanacker (1st round 2024)
LW Nick Lardis
RW Roman Kantersov
C John Mustard
C Anthony Spellacy
RW Jack Pridham

What if they can get Isaac Howard who could be a 60 point winger for a fraction of the cost it would take to get Peterka and they keep their McKenna insurance in case they're total dogshit next year, due to injuries or players needing more time in Rockford etc

Or you get Peterka a proven NHL top 6 LW/RW signed longterm (8 years) who is only 23 yrs old + Howard as well if you want

Seriously Hawks would be adding piece in Peterka who will be as good or better than many of the potential prospects Hawks may have available to pick from next year

the margin of safety is a lot lower if you're trading an unprotected 1st in a year you're likely to be top 5-10 bad and you have to pay him a long term extension on top of that, if there is any regression and he is more of a 50-60 point player and not a ppg player then you're going to get got on the deal if that pick is really high...the 10% chance (or whatever it ends up being) that deal ends up Peterka for McKenna is how you get canned

$9M over 8 years

Get his entire prime years and lock him in as part of this core

And cap is rising so expect players to get more in coming years

Freaking Sam Bennett is looking at $10M+ AAV contract this summer if he doesn't take discount to stay in Florida
Peterka has had 1 really good year, and an OK year. I'd want to see another really good year from him before committing anything close to 9mil over 8 years.

You know what you are getting with Sam Bennett, and I wouldn't pay him 9-10mil either.

no unprotected 1st required, no 9m extension required

Honestly I’d be targeting both. Is Howard a LW or RW? Hawks need both and both anyway.

Seravalli seems to think the Sabres are going to be forced to trade Peterka, I guess things have gone south between the two.

If it’s true, Davidson has to do whatever it takes to get him.
I’m all for it, but there is no chance in hell the 2026 1st should be in those discussions. Even if they don’t win the McKenna sweepstakes, there should be some nice consolation prizes in Lin, Roobroeck, Stenberg, and Verhoeff.

#25 alone would get Howard no problem

Then you just gotta get Peterka for Korchinski + 2026 Florida 1st and maybe one other asset that we won't miss
That would be ideal. I just think BUF would look at Korchinski and say he's not even an upgrade over Byram.

They might prefer a forward for forward swap given the Cozens deal. Maybe a Laf for Peterka type trade.

Howard for pick 25 makes a lot of sense regardless of what they do elsewhere.
