2025 26 Roster…too Soon

Moving the discussion about Marner here, instead of simply posting about it in the GM thread.

Supposedly, Powers says in the latest Powers and Laz podcast (Patreon exclusive) that the Hawks aren't interested in going after Marner in free agency.

Here's an image from reddit, that's a screen grab from Twitler, that's supposedly a quote from Powers on the podcast.

I have infinitely more faith in Kyle after reading this.

I could see Mantha as a buy-low candidate for us. Would be cheap, has a long history with Blashill, could net us a pick if healthy at the deadline. Would be a good team for him to go to, he'll get minutes here in a low pressure environment; good situation for a guy coming off an ACL injury in his early 30s.
Provided they deem him healthy, and he can still skate fast, then yeah I could see that.

Adds size to the lineup and could be good for 20 goals.

All of it garbage. I’m not going to do a write up about why every player would be a mistake, but steer clear.

Mantha especially. Play the damn kids. Make a trade or two to fill out the roster.
They literally have to spent cap. Who or what are you trading to get good players with cap that fills it out.

I’ve been saying for awhile that Leafs pick and some lesser prospects are likely candidates in a trade for a younger roster player. Preferably someone to pair with Bedard, but that’ll be more costly.

The problem with a lot of those guys is they’re in their mid 30s. Due for a major fall off or already falling off. We don’t want a repeat of last year where they stop trying or are just flat out bad.

Give Donato 1 year 8m, retain half and move him at TDL if he puts up 30 goals again...who cares at this point, just get to the floor or take on a short term cap dump for additional assets like the Mikheyev deal...but like HTK said, play the younger players all year

would love if the FO/ownership has recognized that they need 2-3 more years to continue stockpiling assets...its going to be worth the wait if they do it right

I actually wouldn't hate that. Even with a Brodie buyout, Jones' retention, and Weber's contract on the books, they still need to spend ~10M just to get to the floor. That would include Kaiser, Crevier, and Soderblom. It's interesting to see what they might do.

Just fyi, it’s actually 8 million. Kaiser could get up to 3 million on a short term deal, same with Soderblom if Brossoit is completely cooked. Hell Crevier could get up to 2 million.

So I wouldn’t worry about the floor, there’s a pretty simple way to get there worst case scenario.

If they all get say 1 million less than those projections, still only 3 million short. Thats a bottom six player in this free agent class.

I think the guy is looking for a stable place to live.

They may not buy out Brodie. Just send him down to Rockford and carry his cap hit. Gets us closer to the floor, no?

Also, just give Kane a one year deal please for the LOVE OF GOD

It's a bad look to bury Brodie when you can just buy him out.

UFAs will take notice.

Also, play ball with Brodie's agent. He represents Vanacker, so you'll hopefully be dealing with him a lot in the future. Better to stay on his good side.

He’s forfeiting his salary if he doesn’t report. Not the Hawks problem.

I'm absolutely positive, at the end of his career -- having just collected 4.275M from the Hawks this past season -- that Brodie would rather retire to spend time with his wife and family than ride the bus in Rockford for a year.

That doesn't say their ever were on Marner. If they were and aren't anymore then could this be because Blashill.

There's practically consensus that KK was in NHL too early and know you want half a roster to be in NHL too early.

I wouldn't assume it's because of Blashill.

Say what you want about Marner in the post season, but he is a 90-100pt player in the regular season. Don't know many coaches not wanting that, especially when the team he'd theoretically be going to is currently 2nd worst in the league.

Not wanting to sign Marner because of the money is much more of a GM problem. Coaches don't have to figure out how to make the cap work.

Vlasic, Rinzel, Murphy, Kaiser, Crevier, Del Mastro, Allan. There’s seven and you can have KK and Lev down in Rockford.

I like that, as the trade deadline approaches next season you make a decision on and with Murphy who has a 10 team no trade clause...at 33 he may want to set himself up for another stop in the NHL or a shot at a cup... or he and the hawks may choose to resign him to a short term deal.

Murphy to Florida if Ekblad leaves?

I'm still curious if Soderstrom is coming over. Could influence how quick you move Murphy
