2025 26 Roster…too Soon

Im not saying its the closest place to his home... Nobody said that.

What a weird argument. Im saying its a positive that Chicago is close to where hes from. His friends and family can drive to watch him play. People he knows from high school/college are probably living in Chicago.

Our definitions of close are clearly different. I do not consider a suburb of Minneapolis close to Chicago.

Got it. I think a 5.5 hour drive is fairly easy.

"Gaudreau also commented on how Columbus is ideal for him, that a 6 hour drive from Columbus to his family and friends is a good thing as him and his wife will enjoy there own time and space, with friends and family visiting the odd time."

What about snagging Duchene and Drouin in free agency? Both can play quick, have skill and were high picks. Their skills sets and experience could be good for the young guys

You could maybe convince me on Duchene if the deal is short enough but I’d be pretty against Drouin at basically any term. Not a fan of him at all.

Crazy idea here, but maybe he just doesn’t go to a team close to his hometown then?
The point is more that a 5 hour drive is more than palpable for someone who wants to be close to family. Other than the Blackhawks and the Wild, you're flying. Thats a completely different story when it comes to travel.

Maybe he doesn't give af and he signs in SoCal. IDK, but if he does want to be close to home, then he's got two choices.

Brock Nelson had a terrible playoffs with Colorado. I still wouldnt mind him on a really high priced 2 year deal. I think he goes to Minny or back to Long Island tho.

The compensatory pick is a new pick, so nobody is conveying a pick they currently own.

The bidding war is likely exaggerated because only rebuilding teams can likely offer what he’s seeking which is what essentially amounts to a guaranteed roster spot (obviously he can come in and suck and the team owns his rights at that point so can send him down, but I’d expect any team trading for him to at least give him a spot dominant of camp), and as a prospect he is good to/very good but not a can’t miss/superstar potential. A good number of teams are probably also out because he is only one year removed from UFA so if he doesn’t want to go there, he can just wait it out. Gauthier had a much better pedigree and was further from UFA, and didn’t return a crazy package.
Just IMO -
1) No one is trading anything of substance for Howard unless they've talked with his agent and they feel like it's high probability to sign a deal.
2) Let's say that the Hawks could get Howard for TOR's 1st. If the Hawks kept the pick, I'd be really excited if it turned into a Howard equivalent prospect in 3 years. That's why I wouldn't say that it's an overpay, even if including another lower tier asset with the pick to seal the deal. He would fit in well with the timing of the youth movement.
3) Agree that Gauthier is definitely a tier above Howard, but he returned a guy in Drysdale that was seen as a highly skilled potential top pair d-man who looked good at the NHL level (value takes a hit for injury concerns/size). Drysdale did go 6th OA and was traded when he was 21/22.

Over his career has Drouin looked good with anyone except Nate? I wouldn't want to make any sort of significant commitment to him with term, and he probably can get a short term deal staying in COL.

It’s not really close to where he is from. None of his pals are driving 6 hours to catch a game.

the point is he’s not driving 11 - 12 hours round trip during the season to visit mom and pop.
His buddies from high school are not spending 12 hours in a car to see a 3 hr. game.
Aunt Gertrude is not firing up the Bonneville to drive 12 hours. She will see him when Chicago plays v the Wild.

Gaudreau reference isn’t on point either. He wasn’t on an ELC, he had money. CLB is about an hour and a half flight by private aircraft to his childhood home. So he could realistically visit his wife/kids regularly.

I’m guessing we all have a general understanding of an NHL game schedule and practices.
Other than the X-mas break and All Star weekend there are no 1 1/2 day openings permitting a drive to, +\- 12 hr visit, drive back and recovery from having spent 12 hours driving. If there are 2 off days in a row, they are practicing 1 of them.

My buddy made the MLB and we drove to watch his starts in Atlanta. 8 hours from home

I’m not talking about him going home, I’m talking about people coming there.

Why would 34 yr old Duchene one of the top FA's coming off season of 30 goals + 52 assists in 82 games leading a contender in scoring sign with the 2nd worst team in NHL? Duchene is not going to spend final years of his career wasted on a rebuilding team

No thanks on Drouin, His career resurgence is far unlikely to be repeated outside of Colorado

1) Be honest, how many times did you make that drive 16 hours (at least) to watch a 3 hour game?
2) I’m not the one who brought up Gaudreau. Someone claimed he signed in CLB because of the “short” (LOL) drive to/from New Jersey. Gaudreau referred to the short flights so he could spend off days at home.

4 or 5 times. But he was in Philly so he was in Atlanta a lot but not as much as someone who played their home games. If my boy played for Chicago I’d be going to a lot of games if he got me tickets.

Regardless this was more about if he wants that, then he’s got Chicago or Minnesota as realistic options that are close. Obviously Minnesota is literally home. If that’s what he wants maybe he goes there.

Draft results haven’t changed that I think Davidson is loading up a trade for a forward this offseason. Probably an easier bet than chasing after Marner.

This is just wrong.

Duchene isn't going to a bottom feeder unless he wins a cup this season. And if he wins a cup he'll be a 34 year old nursing a cup hangover with not much left to play for. That's a recipe for a big drop off.

As other have said pass on Drouin. He was brutal on the Avs power play.

Space Umpire is being weird about this.

Hudson, MN is like 30 minute drive to MPLS airport, then it's a 90 minute flight to O'Hare with very regular flights.

Or you can drive 5 hours and do an overnight. Rockford is even closer if he spent any time there.

Both options are certainly better than going to and from Tampa, if that's the big holdup here. Nobody is saying he's going to have a pregame meal at Mom and Dad's before the games. I see my friends that live in Michigan more regularly and with greater ease than ones that live in Colorado. When the Hawks play at home Friday night and then have another home game 2 pm Sunday, bring the whole crew, spend the weekend, watch him play twice and still get home late sunday night if you want. This is just common sense.
