Speculation: 2025-26 Coaching/Management/Ownership - Read warning in OP before posting

I put a summary in the other thread, but going to put it here incase people have that thread on ignore or are staying clear of the other conversation:
I'm listening now and will post some highlights:

  • They started considering Q after Cronin was fired.
  • The hockey side of the hire was easy.
  • He didn't have to sell ownership. Henry and Susan talked to Joel privately for a few hours and get very comfortable with him. After they compiled the information of the background, ownership was 100% onboard.
    • The ownership is very involved in the community and has a reputation in the philanthropic world that everyone didn't want to put in jeopardy.
  • "multi-year deal". He wouldn't go into more details.
  • Q will have instant respect when he steps in the lockeroom. He won't have to build relationships and lay groundwork like other coaches would have to.
  • "Simplified system"
  • PV didn't talk to Gudas or Vatrano before making the hire.
  • The way Q treated teamates was incredible.
    • Their past as teamates clearly had a big impact on this hire. PV has a ton of respect for Q from those days - My thoughts
  • Did you think about the timing to sneak the hire under the radar? We wanted to do it as soon as we made the decision, so Q has a lot of ground to get assistants, time to talk to the players and build relationships. He didn't say attract UFAs lol.
  • He wont have to get back in the groove of coaching. Like riding a bike. He talks to a lot of coaches and people. From a strategic standpoint Q is sharp as a tack and on top of it.
  • No word on assistant coaches yet. They are building a list right now.
  • How active will we be in FA? Thats a tough question. It is his goal to improve through FA or a trades.
  • The goal is to make the playoffs.
  • The most disappointing part of the season was losing a ton of games to the teams we would be competing with to make the playoffs (Blues, Flames, Vancouver, etc.)
  • What trends are you noticing in the playoffs? These playoffs have been really physical. He is stressing to the young guys to watch the playoffs and see how important it is to be strong and physical.
  • Cutter improved a lot through the season. 4 nations break was really big for him.
  • Young guys are starting to take steps.
  • The Gauthier trade:
    • Philly reached out to teams. They were shopping him and were looking for a RHD. We were fortunate to have a lot of RHD that are coming that will challenge for roster spots in the next year and a half.
    • PV wanted Gauthier to stay humble when it came to the Philly beef. Torch them and stay humble. This came in response to a question about a comment Cutter had about having the Philly game circled on his calendar.
  • Zegras:
    • The last couple years he has dealt with injries.
    • Right as he gets going he deals with a long injury and loses 2 months and gets set back.
    • Z went to work to play a 200 foot game
    • Cronin was really hard on him
    • Z said noone has every held him accountable to play 200 foot game because he always produced enough to ignore that.
    • Pat told him how if he wants to win in the playoffs he has to play a 200 foot game.
    • Sees his offensive game taking a step since he won't need to focus so much of the defensive side now.
  • Was Cronin too hard on the guys?
    • We needed a major culture shift when Cronin came in. He was that guy to do that. He laid a cultural foundation of accountability.
    • Him being hard was what the team needed.
  • Cam Fowler:
    • Both sides were upfront with each other about what they wanted.
    • It was the right time for Cam.
    • Not surprising for PV at all. He knew Cam needed a fresh start as a player that has gone through the same thing.
    • He wanted our young guys playing and getting the ice time/experience so they are prepared 2 years from now.
    • Cam got a chance to win.
    • It worked out for everyone.
    • Parayko as a linemate allowed Cam to play more freely and let his offense shine. On the Ducks he had to worry about the defense way more.
      • Shocking that Cam playbetter with an actual NHLer as a partner.
  • Leo:
    • Incredibly talented with elite hockey sense.
    • Underrated speed and agility.
    • He is just starting to figure out how to use his size and speed.
    • Pat has been telling him to shoot more because he has a great shot he doesn't use (sound familiar)
    • Wants Leo to be a 50/50 player with half his points coming in goals and half assists.
    • Why did you take Leo over other options
      • Martin Madden has the best saying, "We don't pick who will be the best player at 18-19. We pick who will be the best at 24"
      • His size and skill are going to be a great 200 ft player
    • The Leo plan:
      • Leo had played a lot of hockey in his draft year. In development camp he looked gassed.
      • Talked to sport science guys to get a plan to put weight/muscle on Leo until Christmas time.
      • This allowed him to train like it was the summer
      • Got the handcuffs taken off in January.
      • Worked out for him and Pat wont be afraid to do this again if another kid needs it.
  • The team has gotten a lot closer and learned they need to protect each other on the ice.
  • Vatrano's contract
    • Solomon presented the idea to Pat.
    • Ohtani's contract was the inspiration.
    • Eliminates the tax disadvantage of CA.
    • The first contract like this is the hardest to pull off
    • It sounds like this is something they are going to do more often - my thoughts
  • Gudas
    • Pat actually drafted Gudas.
    • Throwback to Pat's era.
  • Goaltending
    • We don't view either as THE #1
    • 1a/1b
    • 2 really good goalies that will give us an opportunity to win
    • Budaj did a great job with getting Gibby back on track.
    • Pat doesn't talk about the trade rumors with Gibby.
  • There was some tongue in cheek talk about getting more Tampa guys or if they tried to sign Stamkos.
  • Stevie Y is a fun guy, hates the media. Same for Pat
  • Media in Anaheim has a good relationship with Pat. No bad experiences.
  • Will we be a cap team? A lot of young guys that need contracts. That has to be taken into account and we have to manage the cap wisely because of that.
  • Who is the next prospect to arrive? Luneau and Moore but we are going to take our time and develop them. Sennecke is going to get a good look at training camp.
  • Why was Sennecke so shocked?
    • Because they didn't talk to him a lot.
    • The Ducks knew who he was and didnt feel the need to keep having meetings with him.
  • Pats wife is in the car while the interview is happening and they are joking about her having to watch hockey back in the hotel while they are overseas at the world championship.
Thats it!

I think an important under-current is Verbeek is going to step away from trying to do it all.

He already seems to be deferring to Quenneville on a lot and of things PV seemed to want to influence.

Obviously it was tough taking input from Eakins and Cronin when it comes to player development. But I can see him being much more hands off with Quenneville.

There needs to be good communication between the two, but I can see Quenneville telling Verbeek a player he wants and Pat getting him, or at least doing his best to get him.

Agreed. I really felt that previously he had his hand in everything including coaching. Cro even mentioned on one of hi recent interviews how he "got permission" to put Cutter on the 4th line when he was struggling. With Q on board he's going to back off which I see as a good thing. I wouldn't be surprised if that applied elsewhere in the org as well.

It would make sense. Newer, less experienced HCs, forcing Pats hand a bit to drive the ship and put his vision into action. Now with a guy like Q who has been there, done that and who has a wealth of hockey knowledge, can talk with Pat about what THEY want and the front office having more confidence in Q to put that into action without needing to micromanage it as much.

I just hope once OCVibe and the arena upgrades are done and the Ducks are theoretically a contender he's bored enough to buy the Angels
Same. Arte has literally become Mr. Burns.
Even then I'd argue Mr. Burns on the simpsons treats his employees better than Arte.

Fun fact: Mike Scioscia played for Mr. Burns on The Simpsons in an 1990s episode lol.
