2025-2026 Way Too Early Predictions

Colorado wins the west
Florida wins the east
Colorado wins the cup
Calgary finishes 17th

I think it's possible, but I don't think they can retain both Marchand and Bennett, and losing Ekblad is basically a given. They have 19 million to re-sign Marchand, Bennett, Nosek, Samoskevich, Sturm, Ekblad, Schmidt, Vanecek, and Megna. They will definitely thin out a bit on the bottom end one way or the other. They'd basically have close to nothing left if even they convince both Marchand and Bennett to take discounts. Tampa isn't really taking a step back, wasn't that far off, and wasn't close to 100% this year. I still think Florida is the team to beat, but if they only have 1/3 of Ekblad, Marchand, and Bennett, that really hurts. Plus, they have to re-sign Bob next summer and that only gets more complicated if they keep two of those three big guys.
I dont think you spent very much time actually looking at their cap situation. All but guaranteed they keep 2 of the 3 big UFA's. Do you think they plan on signing 26 guys to one way deals?

Have YOU looked at their cap situation?

19 million in space, 9 free agents coming off of one-way deals, 16 players out of 23 spots under contract.

Even at a conservative estimate, Marchand is going to make $6.5 million a year, Bennett will make $8, Ekblad will make $6ish. Realistically, if FLA had their choice, they would take the 14 million ish combo of Marchand and Bennett, I think.

Now back to those 9 free agents. Seven of those guys played most nights in the starting lineup: (Nosek (59 reg season games, missed all of Oct with injury), Marchand, Ekblad, Bennett (could've included games played, but they're obvious starters), Samoskevich (72 reg season games), Sturm (62 reg season games), Schmidt (80 reg season games)), and then there's Vanecek, and the Panthers kind of need to have at least someone playing backup goalie. Jaycob Megna could go and it wouldn't make a difference.

So you start with 19 million, give roughly 14 million (remember, that estimate is pretty conservative, both players are easily worth more on the market) to Bennett and Marchand, and then are left with $5 million to fill out basically the entire 4th line, the backup goalie, and an entire defensive pairing.

I don't think anyone in that group would take sub $1 million (maybe Sturm would, but he's aging and could easily crack 7 figures elsewhere). Schmidt could probably make $3 million or more on the season he had. 5 points in the cup final alone as a bargain bin defenseman?

I don't think they're signing 26 guys to one way deals, but they can't realistically have a season with an active roster of sub 20 players under contract.

They have 10 forwards, 5 D and 1 goalies signed.

If they Give Bennett 8. Thats 11 million to sign 2 forwards, 2 D and a goalie. Lets say Ekblad gets 7. Now they have 4 million to sign 4 guys. Players are going to sign for league minimum to play on a championship team. You dont have to sign 23 guys either... Its wishful thinking man.

Nashville, Philly, Pittsburgh. Chicago, San Jose will start their quest for McKenna on July 1st.

Pittsburgh gets him when the Rangers finish 9th and win the lottery.
