2025 - 2026 Brampton Steelheads Season Thread, Part I

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Gearing up for a serious 27/28 run.

Trade Adams after Sept 1st for more draft capital. Get the compensation 1st in '27. That means Steelheads will have MINIMUM 9 picks in the first 4 rounds in '27, not even counting what Adams brings in, plus 2 2nds in each of '28 and '29.

The compensation would be ‘27 pick #5 and a pick at the end of round 2.

We need a quality young forward now! Not in 2027. JR needs to convince Adams to stay and play or find a couple of trading partners to bring in a very talented forward in return for Adams.

With all the good players available for draft, JR now he has to wait until September to trade for picks and hopefully flip those picks for good older players. Not a good year for Brampton to use the defected player rule since they have so little talent up front and as far as convincing Adams and his family to come, if Oshawa couldn't do it, how would Brampton be able to?

Can't get players in trades for players that defect

Brampton can use the picks had in return for trading the defect as well as the comp-2nd to get a very good player..
If Adams does defect, the steelheads will have 2-1sts, 4-2nds, 3-3rds, 3-4ths for the ‘27 draft not including picks received for the defect.

I’m pretty sure that team will be adding players in addition to the #7 import selection.

It appears that I was wrong about 4-2nds in ‘27. Brampton would have 2-2nds if Adams defects.

Could just be pr but thats not what Tanners agent said on the record to Sudbury Star reporter Ben Leeson this week.

"I just want to make it clear it's nothing against the Brampton Steelheads" Maloney told the Sudbury Star "it could have been anyone drafting at 3 and it would have been the same situation. It's just for a lot of personal reasons and financial reasons they want to be in Sudbury."

Adams is an indigenous player and his family wants him closer to his home community and support systems in the Timmins area, his agent said, and they made that clear to the Brampton brass and the league in the lead up to the draft.

"Being down in southern Ontario the last 2 years has been really hard on him" Maloney explained "They don't see a reason to continue that if there's an OHL team in Sudbury - why not play there"

"They're pretty resoute on it. There's no bend on it. If they are playing OHL hockey, it will be in Sudbury, so hopefully we get something worked out"

Maloney said Adam's no show at thr draft was partly due to travel from Timmins to Kingston.

"We also had an inclination they were going to draft him, so we felt like it would not have been the right thing to do to go on stage for a team they have no intent on signing with"

Article also mentioned interesy from the USHL but that would be less than ideal for the same reasons as going to southern ontario.

His family feels it is best for him to play in the north for the next 2-3 years.

Like I said could just be PR but the Agent has gone on record that Southern Ontario is a no go for the family if he is playing OHL hockey. It an interesting article.

You can believe me or not, we was going 1 and then Rocco decided he wanted Cloutier and plans changed.

I get it from the kids perspective, if I can’t go 1 might as well be closer to home

All that being said, and I’m sure truthful; it is still posturing. I think in the end Adams would be more than happy go play for the Kitchener or London coaches or down the road from Sudbury in North Bay or Oshawa if the owner had wanted him.
I’m just really happy for Brampton getting to take advantage of the defect rule. They were the true lottery winners imo.

I can see it both ways to be honest.

Having worked with Oshawa and in Brampton when it was the Battalion (different org I know) they aren't equal. When I had the choice of internship even through Brampton was my "hometown" (born North York, but lived in Brampton from 4-16), Oshawa was my preference.

like i said could be alittle bit of PR on the side of the player but they are on record now.

With the evolution of OHL hockey this past year, should we still have the defective rule? To me, it’s a bad look for the league that players are manipulated to secure extra picks. If your Adams, you miss the draft experience, you miss Orientation Camps, you miss many opportunities by waiting until September 1st-15th for resolution. In a world where the league is trying to enhance the player experience, this defective rule seems counter productive. The manipulation of the Defective rule has been happen for awhile but it might be time to review it. Knowing ahead that Adams wasn’t going to report to Brampton or any other GTA/southern team, would Brampton still pick him and risk waisting a first round pick (with no compensation)? Answer: No or unlikely.
With the Priority Draft pushed back allowing teams more time to prepare, there should be no surprises, your picks need to show up. Selecting a player who has given sufficient notice they won’t report hurts that player, manipulates the next draft and is a bad look for the league.

Do you not remember the [edit: draft of 1999 & 2000 born] for Sudbury? That’s what the defect rule is in place for. Sudbury could/should have used it.
It was Adams that manipulated the draft. Brampton just benefits taking advantage of the compensation the league put in place to ensure teams get appropriate draft value.

I don’t disagree but do you feel the defective process is still required?

How did you end up in Sudbury. Usually the other way around. From north to south.

Normally yeah but the pace in Toronto isn't for everyone. Got to be too go go go for me.

So after I graduated College I met my now wife online she's from Lively and I was ready for a change of pace. Plus most of my family was in the North at the time so made it and easier decision to Sudbury. Now married with 2 kids in hockey (both U9) and 1 U12 in Ringette.
