Honestly, at this point I am losing most of my interest in international hockey in general, replaced by football (and to a lesser extenct baskeball). This is happening among most of my Finnish friends as well.

FIFA is corrupt and the Qatar tournament is far from ideal, but at least we have international football of the highest level.

Wake me up when the sabotage of international hockey stops and there is actual best on best hockey. NHL players not going to Korea was short sighted, 2016 WC was a joke, cancelling Beijing participation because of Covid was BS, and the list goes on. It is honestly so disappointing, just thinking about it makes me sad and makes me grow apart from hockey a bit.

Teams have been banned because of similar things way before 2022 and way before wokeness existed.
Also, wokeness is about unseen, hidden stuff like certain color of skin privilege for example, not smth obvious like a military campaign and everything else attached here. I couldn't care less about the FIFA World Cup anymore and I've enthusiastically followed every edition for decades. The Qatar Winter Cup is soccer's equivalent to the 2016 WCoH.

Yeah, Qatar is far from ideal to me too, but it has no gimmick teams. That is by far the biggest difference, gimmick teams have no place in international sports, it makes it a complete joke.

I wasn't saying that Russia isn't entertaining team to watch, also DDR and USSR teams were very entertaining i'm sure. And Germany in the 1930's and 40's.

Point being, you don't deserve to participate in any international events for a good reason. First ROC and now even that isn't allowed. That big piece of tundra has caused almost nothing but harm. Thanks for the romantic era composers and poets but it's been over hundred years ago, after that just misery. Go play with Belarus, North Korea and China.

The failure of the NHL to figure out how to organize or participate in true best-on-best tournaments for over a decade is probably the most disappointing thing in sports for me.

Them scuttling the tournament over questions about Russia's participation just seems so tone deaf. Does anyone really expect this to all just blow over with an extra year, and not have it be a controversial decision to invite them? I'm very doubtful, unless there are some major changes, which honestly don't seem very realistic at this point.

That is indeed a hug part of what makes it so blatantly annoying. If you could wait a year and guarantee Russian participation that's one thing. It seems unlikely, though not impossible, that things will change with Russia one year later, particularly with regard to the Swede/Czech/Finn block that is probably the NHL's biggest obstacle to inviting Russia.

Finland would at least be forced to boycott world cup if Russia was invited. Perhaps it's tough to understand if you aren't in the same place Finland is. You can't imagine the public backlash if Finland would not boycott. Also, when Finland boycotts, Sweden's very likely to follow suit.

So naive if you think that it's as simple as letting Russia participate.

It was absolutely unthinkable to have the tournament in 2024 with Russia participating. At least all other European countries would just refuse to participate. I don't know exactly how do things look over the ocean, but virtually nobody in Europe can imagine having Russia participating in a major sport event right now. Postponing the tournament for 2025 has clearly been an attempt to give things some more time, and hope the international situation would change until then. It makes sense: Having a World Cup without such a force like Russia would be odd. I don't dare to predict how things might look in 2025 thought.

I have LOTS of opinions (check your inbox for an article I wrote about it in an appropriate place to talk about it) on the politics of it all.. I just don't go to hockey boards to talk about war.
