The Russia issue way clearly the main reason. They hope it will be settled down before 2025. I can understand it, would be weird having such tournament without Russian players. However, they should consider waiting for the 2026 Olympics in Italy. That's my opition.

We are about 50 days from 2023. Just brutal. Is there another sport with this long a pause? We basically have no best on best hockey.

Since 2014 we have:
A horrible joke of a 2016 world cup tournament. Worse than no tournament.
A pointless 2018 olympic tournament.
A cancelled 2020 world cup tournament with no replacement.
A pointless 2022 olympic tournament.
A cancelled 2024 world cup tournament with a dubious replacement date.
In hockey terms it is a wasted generation with no hockey at the highest level.

Not pointless. Finland won gold.
Don’t be silly - currently any tournament including Russia will meet with complete European boycott. It doesn’t matter if it’s NHL or IIHF tournament.
Russia is simply not tolerated right now, if the NHL wants them in, they can organise a 3-party tournament (US, CAN, RUS) . Other option is World Cup with no Russians whatsoever.

Finland won gold at a pointless tournament in that instance. The disappointing part is that Finland could have won any of those tournaments if the best players had actually been there.

It's kinda funny how right when USA gets good as far as the % of NHL players, the best on best NHL competition gets cancelled
1995-96: 18.4 % of Games Played
1997-98: 16.8 % of Games Played
2001-02: 15.3 % of Games Played
2005-06: 17.9 % of Games Played
2006-10: 20.6 % of Games Played
2013-14: 23.0 % of Games Played
2022-23: 28.1 % of Games Played
USA Hockey is basically at its strongest but NHL greed prevents international competition with NHL Players even though a competition with USA NHL players could help spark interest in American markets.
The % gap between Canadians and Americans in the NHL is 14.6 % (42.7 % - 28.1 %). It was 37.1 % at the time of the 2002 Olympics by comparison.

Can we just forget that Russia exists? Every major hockey association could send funds and coaches to some eastern european country and make them competitive in few years, Russia problem solved.

the bigger issue is culture and infrastructure. Funds and coaches won't fix that. Ice Hockey is just a very expensive sport and there is not a ton of interest outside of a few countries.

I dont think it would be that big of a deal to play without Russia. They dont deserve to have a spot.

At the 2011 world juniors there was a blond woman who came to a lot of the games involving the non powers where she would get drunk and stand down by the glass and yell. I distinctly recall that she always called Germany "Douche Land" and rooted against them. I always assumed she was not actually Finnish but now....
Can we forget Finland exists ? Something tells me Russia is way more marketable for an average NA viewer than boring Finnish team?
I bet Canada vs Finland or USA vs Finland is what the North American fans dreaming of
