OT: 2024 Washington Commanders thread: change we can believe in!

BRob started the year with a lot of burst - but then was pretty bad the second half of the season. Not sure if it was OL injuries or he was banged up - but he’s really just not that talented.

RB is the one position they keep saying is loaded in this draft. We have lots of foundational needs, but getting someone like Henderson, or Judkins in the mid-rounds would be cool.

Definitely….and I found him disappointing most games as a short yardage back this year.

Agreed, and he might be capable of it, but so few teams actually run that way anymore. That old Power I, HB deep, sometimes with a fan-fave FB leading the way. I miss that -- snapping the ball, handing it off, and the idea seems to be, "It's the O-Line's job to break a hole up front, but so long as they make a crack, we'll smash it loose." Handed the ball in the backfield, it's an immediate sprint, and you get what you get.

These days it feels like everything is disguised, everything is late-developing, everything is an option, and thus there's so few times where a RB is handed the ball and just GOES. There's always some p***y-footing, shuffle-stepping up to the line, looking for something, so they never get any forward momentum going.

So today's bruiser back not only has to be a hard-nosed runner, but he better have superior vision and acceleration or your running game's truly f***ed. I mean seriously, in today's 4th-and-1 world, how many teams actually EVEN TRY to ram it home with a running back?

Maybe I'm just old. Get off my lawn, I guess. ;)

Yeah, those are factors for sure. I'm all for giving him an opportunity to keep his job, but I'd like to see some serious competition in camp.

Absolutely if a good one's available, but I also wouldn't mind paying for a reputable free agent. Feels like we're a serious destination now. But yeah, if there's a BPA RB at one of our spots or we can maneuver for one AP & Co. like, definitely do it.

Lastly, and I'm not trying to bring up the old discussion on this, but the whole Rebranding The Team thing feels iffier now that a Commanders team actually did something legacy-worthy. Anyone else feeling that?

I guess what I'm asking is, for those of you that still wanted the team to rebrand under the new regime, do you still feel that way? Did this year make it feel less necessary or meaningful?

100% yes, change it all. I still hate the name Commanders because it was shoved down our throats by Ron and Dan and it will always have their stink on it. hate the jerseys, hate the stupid W logo (so unimaginative), and hate how that name came into existence.

They could change it to almost anything else and I'd embrace it. Warriors, Red Tails, Red Wolves, Red Skinned Potatoes, even Football Club/Team. Go back to the colors and jerseys from any of the old school era versions. Anything, except what they are now.

Keeping the crappy name would not just hang the Snyder/River error, sorry, era around the franchise's neck, it would stamp it in concrete.

This new ownership is a whole new era for the team, and a rebirth. Three years (is that right? It feels more like 10) is not a significant enough period of time to decide, "Eff it, it's what we ended up with, so it's what we're gonna stick with."

They also need to get rid of the not-burgundy-and-gold color scheme, the stupid sublimated pixel-dots and the idiotic black unis -- a color that was NEVER part of this organization's history, and as such is another remnant of the worst period in the franchise's history. I know there are a lot of us who, in spite of the ownership change, will not spend a dime on merch that was dreamed up by Satan's wife.

Burn every physical vestige of the era that was the most embarrassing on the field and, somehow, more embarrassing off it.

Hey, just to be clear, I agree with you guys completely. I'm all for something new so we can put it to bed forever. I guess it's just that the team was so bad for so long that the rebrand was like all that was relevant about our club except for who the executives were sexually harassing this week. This year the name really never came up because finally there were other, greater things to say about our team.

Just got me thinking that maybe it'd become an out of sight, out of mind type of thing now that we really do have bigger fish to fry. That said, I know they want to be intentional and respectful about it, but I really don't think patience is a virtue on this issue anymore. Now that we're such a relevant team, "Commanders" is getting hammered into peoples' psyches. I wouldn't let it linger too long.

I'm not so angry about the name anymore, but I'll never feel attached to it, despite this magical season. So yea, whenever they get around to changing it, that would be fine. Like, if they do it this Saturday, that'd be great.

The name sucks. But careful what you wish for. New owners seem to do stuff right, but they'd really need to kill it if they do another rebrand this soon.
The could name them "Banana Slugs, Jr." and that would be "killing it" in comparison to the "Commanders," which, in reality, means "Ron Riveras."

You have kids getting into Washington football for the first time. Jayden’s jersey is the best selling jersey of 2025 in all of sports. I don’t think people < 25 care about the old name/identity. So I do think winning makes it more likely to stay. And the Harris group has said repeatedly that re-branding is ‘not a priority.’

So, while I don’t like the name, I’m not expecting them to change it. Hopefully they make tweaks to the unis.

I’d probably be more ok with it, if there was actually a good shortened nickname. The Commies jokes are fun (and annoy my dad, lol), but otherwise what - Mandos? Manders? Meh.

Hey I love the black jerseys!

I mean, they could've made unis that blended into the field. Commanders in camo.

Opportunity missed.

Yes the name sucks and I stutter like the Fonz trying to say "I was wrong" every time I utter it. It just doesn't feel right coming out of my mouth and never will. Plus WFT is easier to type.

Here is why I think the name will not change.

I've been watching the Redskins since I was a kid in 1990 at the tail end of the Joe Gibbs dynasty teams, so I guess I'm right on the cusp of being old school. Until this season, I hadn't watched a single game for the last 10 years (The Dan Snyder effect). With him gone, it's as if a giant weight has been lifted off this franchise. There's hope again, and a lot of us old fans are returning.

Maybe I'm in the minority as a somewhat old school fan, but I could care less about the name of the team. I never felt fully comfortable with the name Redskins and I'm not sad that it's gone. I understand that there's a lot of history under the old name, but I feel like the name was too problematic to keep. I do, however, miss the old logo and I hope it makes a comeback as an alternate jersey.

At first I thought the name Commanders was kind of lame, but I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore. If there were enough fans who really hated the name, the team would change it again. The problem is that most of the fans who hate the name, will only be happy if it goes back to Redskins, which is a pipe dream, so it doesn't really matter what they think. They are deluding themselves if they think the old name and all of it's problems are coming back.

Without those old school "change it back to Redskins" fans, that only leaves the fans who hate the name Commanders, but don't want it to go back to being the Redskins. That's not a big enough portion of the fan base to inspire the team to make a change. The majority of Washington Fans, are made up of either old school people like me who don't want to go back to the old name or don't really care, and younger fans who weren't around for the glory days and are just fine with the name Commanders.

My final thoughts. Redskins was never a great name, but because of the history of the franchise with it's hall of fame players and championships, it came to have special meaning to us fans. I don't think the name Commanders is a great name either, but under promising new ownership and a young generational Quarterback, maybe they can make some history of their own, and we'll come to feel differently about the name Commanders in a few decades.

So Sirianni was in the ear of the refs before that "cut it out or we'll give Philly a TD" announcement.

Why am I not shocked.

PHI now 7-0 with that ref crew. I wonder if they get them for the SB

"Many believed the Jets dodged a bullet not signing Lance Newmark, who seemed like a shoo-in for the job just last week. While Newmark has had a good run recently as assistant with the Washington Commanders after coming over from the Detroit Lions, people say his overall body of work has been terrible. The Jets hired Darren Mougey to be their next general manager. Mougey is a great story, starting as a scouting intern and working his way up the ladder. People from Denver that I’ve spoken with say he’s smart, hard-working and knows talent. The best compliment of all? Someone from the Broncos said Mougey is “an Adam Peters type,” referring to the general manager of the Washington Commanders."

I dunno man.

First — I grew up w the team, as they went from Jack Pardee (I witnessed 2 of his seasons) to Joe Gibbs. So I saw all of that.

Second — I thought the name was cool as a kid (the whole Cowboy vs Indians thing), and I LOVED the uniforms. Obv as a child, I didn’t grasp the name as being offensive. Later I did, and I understood both sides of the argument. I DO think it was changed to appease people that hated Snyder, or were non-Indians who thought it was offensive. From what I’ve read over the years, more Indians liked it, then hated it?

Third — I have no illusions that they will go back to the old name. I’d like it, but I certainly don’t expect it. That said, I still hate the name Commanders (and their god awful Tanyaforms that they wear — especially on the road), and would be thrilled with a change. I honestly think a LOT of us feel that way. It’s simply NOT “Redskins or bust”. I candidly don’t know anyone that feels that way?
