Player Discussion: 2024 Vezina Finalist Connor Hellebuyck

Unfortunately, I missed most of that tournament but that's an interesting observation. Early in his career he had a similar issue. I think the remedy then was to hold his glove hand a little higher. Whatever it was, he adjuasted and became really good. Could he be reverting slightly to his old form?
I stole this from @PhilJets post in another thread... but it looks like yes, he's holding his glove forward and high (but didn't help him on this shot lol)

He's crouching more in the 2nd photo, playing slightly smaller, more of a concave stance. By doing so, he's giving up more room surrounding his body. He also looks like he's in too much of a fixated position in the 2nd pic, like he's predicting the shot too much and reacting too quickly.

Those are great photos for comparison.

Good photo. Glove looks to be is a reasonable spot. Maybe it is in his head?
Let's hope he can bring Vezina quality tending tonight.
Go Jets Go!🤞🤞
When we score on shots like that, we cheer the amazing play

When other teams score on Helle with shots like that, we condemn Helle

People seem to forget that some shots are just really tough to stop

Personally, I think that the overall save % drop in the league can be partially explained by players adapting to how goaltending evolved to the positional style. Players learned that goalies were getting big and taking away 90% of the net, and started shooting more for what's usually available

Its way more complex than that.

You think Hellebuyck has played well enough for the Jets to win? Sure, Tuesdays game wasn't god awful but outside of game 7 has Hellebuyck had a 'good' game? Even that game we had to come back last minute to eventually win he let in some bad goals.

I've said the entire team needs to be better but Hellebuyck simply has not provided a baseline of effectiveness that we need to have success in the playoffs.

He's not even middling. He's by far the worst goalie over the last 2 playoffs.

I want to have even faint hope we can go far in the playoffs and maybe even win it all but Hellebuycks play makes that impossible.
Shutout wasn't good game?

I have a question did any of the Jet shots hit the top glove side corner on Oettinger?
I mostly saw the Jets missing the net (over 40 shot attempts missed) and most of the shots hit Oettinger in the crest.
Yesterday Vegas's game I saw two shots trying to beat Skinner top glove side ... one shot was too high missed above the net and the other shot was too low which hit Skinner in the shoulder. Both times the corners were open but the shooter missed. Seriously no goalie is going to stop a perfect top corner shot. A lot of these shots it's not the goalie making the great save its the shooter missed the target. It's all about being able to read the play, seeing the shot and covering as much of the net as possible. Also it helps when your D men can keep the opposing players away from the crease. Something the Vegas D didn't do on the OT winner.
Did Skinner go from back goalie to Superstar goalie B2B shutouts in 10 days?
Team play like McDavid said.

i think it was a great shot. Not looking at the tender. Shot was up and had velocity..

Sometimes i think we need to credit the NHL players that they can pick corners.

BUT I THINK if Helly was a little bit more to the left , he could have saved it. But it was played as a pass all the way down. So most likely tender was cheating , I think that was Rantanen on that 2-1 with Grandlund.

Since granlund is a lefty on his off wing, Helle has to respect far side. A righty in the same spot wouldn't have the same angle, and helle could have cheated to his glove

Hellebuyck was v good last night. Stars had a few great chances but not a lot and Helle came up big.

The Jets have been really good at limiting his workload at home. Playoff low in both SOG/60 allowed, and xGA/60.

Hellebuyck finishes the playoffs with the 7th-worst SV% of all time since the NHL started tracking SV% in 1955-56 of goalies that played 10+ gp (trying to estimate 2 rounds).

interestingly, he actually faced the 8th least rate of Shots (per-60) of all time as well.
