The Blue Jays likely asked that the grounds crew TRY to get the field in playable shape (because after an hour, KC can declare a win). It is up to the umps whether the game goes to official delay, but they had to at least try to see if the field could be playable.
An hour only? ive seen delays much longer than that, closer to 3 hours. It's a day game too so its not like it super late.

For one hour from the time the rain delay is declared, the umpires have full say over whether the game continues.

After an hour, the home team gets to decide whether the game continues (the umpires can stop the game from resuming if it is still raining, but they cannot end the game).

This happened to the Jays in NY a while ago. A little over one hour, the Yankees ended the game and the rain stopped twenty minutes later.

Ah, well its not ending in an hour, so this game's a wrap, since the Royals have the lead.

Looking at the radar it looks like it should end fairly soon witin half an hour. how long it takes them to prep the field though is another issue.

Most teams aren't assholes like the Yankees and use the forecast to make the call (they'd prefer to win in 9).

There was just an update on TV. The game will start again in 20-40 minutes, but will be moved to Sportsnet One because of the hockey games on the main channels.

Yeah I'm genuinely surprised. Jays really lucked out with this one, they should count their blessings and score some damn runs and split this series!

I really like Clement’s game.

I wasn’t suggesting they move on from Vladdy and Bo. Not enough was done to augment around them.
The lineup is good enough if those three players are performing even at their career average. Bo's WAR is 0.0 and Vladdy is 0.1. Other than the KK signing, should have gone with an LF that can hit, they have done a good job at building a team around them. Those two players and to a lesser extent Springer, need to perform.

The one problem has been there wasn't a next wave of prospects coming up. Jays have done excellent with free agent pitchers but they haven't developed any of their own. The same can be said for the bats. Jays have turned prospects into good assets but it's nice having cheaper deals on the team.

Turner is the DH, how much energy does he expend each game? Plus it’s early in the season.

You’d be surprised how tiring swinging a wooden bat is. And at that age muscles just aren’t recovering as fast as they used to.

But Turner is also reverse aging so I’d put him in every day.

Wow, they are not gonna play. Just heard on the radio the guys describing everyone walking off the field and packing up...

This is truly the most bizzare rain delay situation ive seen.

Sportsnet 1 still has an alert bar on the bottom saying that the game is coming up in 20-40 minutes even though we're at an hour and 20 minutes since that time frame was given.

I'm wondering if the amount of time they stalled and waited and tried to play through the rain earlier instead of just getting the tarp on has left the infield too waterlogged to be playable.

Yeah, so the Royals did screw us, even worse than if they called it right away, because the Jays wasted 4 hours where they could have been on their way home.

Most bizzare way to lose 3 straight, 1 run games. Vlad error and the rain delay hurt us. Shitty luck sometimes.
Yeah the team that played the astros & yanks the first time around showed up.

They managed to score 4-5 runs for a couple weeks to win some series, and that dried up. nobody else steps up in a big spot. Kirk is garbage with RISP. so is Vladdy, Bo, Springer...

The good news is they should finsh April close to 500 despite to poor hitting. The bad news is the poor hitting looks like it’ll continue into May.

I think that's debatable. Some accounts had the Jays as the ones pressing to continue the game earlier, possibly to see if they could tie it up before the suspension so that they couldn't just be slapped with an L because they were trailing halfway through the game. So it's partially their fault that things dragged as long as they did instead of getting the tarp on early.

Also during the bit with Jamie & Joe to announce the game was done they showed Schneider and the Royals manager testing the infield and it seems like both of them had issues with how soft and unsuitable the dirt was. So it would appear as if Schneider was as much against the resumption of the game as the Royals' manager was.

Atkins has built a Walmart version of his Cleveland teams. All pitching and defense, but even less offense than he had in Cleveland and less speed so they can’t even manufacture runs.

And they play in a division where power and offense are necessary, unlike the Central was in those days.
