Not Colton. He’s a 3rd line player, Drouin isn’t. JD is a top 6 forward. With Landy back, top 6 will be full, and don’t think Drouin fits well on 3rd line. I think he’s gone. Also Colton is developing solid chemistry on the 3rd line with Coyle, and we have Coyle another year. They’ll want to keep those two together

If Drouin can't play on the 3rd line just keep him in the top 6 and have one of Landeskog/Lehkonen/Nichushkin bossing it on the 3rd line with Coyle.

Dont you dare think about letting JD walk. I already had to accept my 2nd favorite team not extending Michal dal Colle, losing JD is not an Option. He's a great player, produces well, turned into a great 2 way player and has insane chemistry with Nate. Keep him!
They may not have a choice but to let Drouin go. If Landy is back, healthy, gets back to his old self which means he should be one the 1st or 2nd line, what do you do with Drouin? As I mentioned in my other post, Drouin won’t help us on the 3rd line. He need to be on top 2 lines to produce.

Unfortunately Drouin might be the casualty of not only the cap, but Landy being back and healthy. We also can’t keep Landy on the 3rd line forever paying him 7 mill. He’ll probably be on the 3rd line if he comes back in the playoffs, but not for long once he gets back to shape.

I could maybe see Lehky on the 3rd line, but he also does so much on top 2 lines, not sure it’s a good idea to move him down, same with Val. This whole thing depends on Landy and what his future gonna be as far as health. If he fully recovers and stays healthy, they’re not gonna pay Landy 7 mill to be a 3rd line winger

There's no reason to trade both Girard and Manson, unless you're dead set on keeping Colton for whatever reason. I'd trade Colton way before moving either Girard or Manson.

He said the reason. By having a less expensive third pairing, in theory, the can have a better third pairing. A better third pairing means better depth and being more adaptable to injuries. But you’re not trading Girard for the sake of trading him. It depends on what opportunities come from doing this.

There is a another option other than letting Drouin walk or wasting one of Lehkonen/Nichushkin/Landeskog on the 3rd line... which is to trade a winger for a RHD. I'll leave it at that lol

@MarkT

So I previously suggested trading Manson and rolling with EJ/Malinski on the right until a 2 RHD can be found by the TDL... that is, the group below:

Toews - Makar
Girard - EJ
Lindgren - Malinski
Middleton

... But what if you did that but then played Lindgren on the right and added a 3rd pairing LHD (as shown below)?

Toews - Makar
Girard - Lindgren
LHD - Malinski
Middleton/EJ

The handedness with a LHS on the right is an issue but at least this way you're maximizing assets and getting younger and healthier by choosing Lindgren over Manson, and you'll still have a solid top 4.

The only issue is the handedness, but that can be resolved in time, as the idea would be to find a long-term 2 RHD as the cap rises to push Lindgren back down. In the meantime you sign a bottom pairing LHD to a short-term deal who gets pushed down to 7D whenever a RHD is found.

With the signings listed below you'd have 21 guys and $1.6m in capspace to spend on a 3rd pairing LHD in the offseason. The LHD could either be a 2025 UFA who you sign to a 1-2 year deal, or you could trade for a guy with 1-2 years term left with a low enough caphit. Maybe you shave off $500k somewhere and have around $2.1m to play with which would be enough for a pretty decent bottom pairing Dman.

Nelson $7m
Drouin $3.5m
Vesey $800k
Lindgren $4.5m
Malinski $1.5m

Not at all. But that’s possible. Bednar plays Makar and Toews a lot of minutes. He also plays MacKinnon a lot of minutes. Makar likely gets overplayed for several reasons. He’s on the PK. Manson is often injured. And not having an adequate 2nd line will lead to Bednar wanting MacKinnon and Makar on the ice together to compensate. By having a situation where there is a less significant drop off between the 2nd and third pairing, you have more flexibility to move guys up and down depending on circumstance. Manson Girard work ok provided Manson stays healthy. But he’s injured a lot. Everyone thinks it’s ok as long as he’s healthy for the post season. But if the cost is overplaying Makar during the regular season, that should be heavily considered.

Thanks for clarifying.

I'm not understanding why a less expensive third pairing means that they can have a better third pairing. If the 3rd pairing is cheaper it would most certainly be worse more often than not, because better players tend to cost more.

I said a better third pairing, not a less expensive one. If anything, it’s the opposite.

Somebody mentioned Behrens as an option for the Avs' D next season. Highly doubtful. Behrens is recovering from a torn ACL and missed the entire 2024/2025 season. He only played two games with the Eagles before the injury. If he plays next season it will be for the Eagles. Any talk of Behrens taking a roster spot with the Avs next season, IMHO, is wishful thinking 🤔

You literally said that...
