Sox are 3rd in team batting average (.260).

But 7th in runs scored.

Of the top 15 run scoring teams the Sox have the most strikeouts.

Only Colorado, Oakland and Seattle strikeout more.

Could be a correlation there.

Cut down the K's, please.

Pitching and defense wins you a WS.
Our hitting has never been in doubt, we have a great lineup with speed.
I look at our OPS to evaluate against the rest of the league and we are 4th ( .765).
Pitching in ERA we are 13th, not great but not bad.
It's the team defense that worries me, we rank 30th at .979
CB did nothing at the deadline to improve our defense.

Sox did this pretty much with 70 power house lineups

Evans
Fisk
Cooper
Burleson
Oglivie
Rice
Lynn
Hobson

They developed Lee & Stanley but traded for Wise & Cleveland and signed Tiant off scrap heap

The
Fisk
Copper
Lynn
Rice
Evans

Shoulda been one for the ages

Toss in Burleson as the glue in the middle & Yastrzemski as the iconic player

I still can’t believe they didn’t get 2-3 WS titles
Circling back because I found something somewhat germane to an earlier conversation ...

I have a small Hall philosophy. While Dewey was my favorite player growing up, I thought he belonged in the Hall of Very Good. He certainly was a defensive whiz with 8 Gold Gloves long before his bat finally arrived in his very late 20s. My perception was that although he had longevity, his lackluster stats early in his career doomed him from real consideration. I came across these stats, and now I'm not so sure.

That's some serious company he's keeping.

I never watched Evans thinking he was a HOF and I was following Sox hardcore for 4 years before he came up

When I watched Lynn, Rice, and Fisk I thought I was watching a HOF

Garciaparra as well

Same. Rice, Lynn and Fisk significantly altered the way I watched Evans. I liked the way Dewey carried himself. He was a professional. Rarely saw him argue. When he did, it was generally measured and quick. His arm mesmerized me.

Was worth the price of admission to see (actually, not be able to see) Rice hit a line drive anywhere.

Agreed. But poor hitting teams seldom win either. Current WS champs didn't win with pitching last season.

How could the GM improve the defense at the trade deadline? Who could he have gotten, that was available, to accomplish that?
