Soto being only 26 next year is probably a factor in them being willing to splurge on him. You’d essentially be purchasing the entire prime of a generational talent. You almost never have the opportunity to do that in free agency. He’s a once in a lifetime free agent.

It’s not like buying into him when he’s 30 or even 28. Getting him at 26 makes a big difference on a 12+ year deal
