Field for the 152nd Open Championship

Weather Forecast

It's glory's last shot at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland for the final major of the season, the 152nd Open Championship. Brian Harman is the defending champion, and Henrik Stenson famously claimed victory the last time the Open was held at Troon in 2016.

For the first time this season, the biggest storyline coming in is not Scottie Scheffler, but rather his counterpart Rory McIlroy, who comes in fresh off of his most heartbreaking close call yet at Pinehurst just a month ago. Rory took a whole month off to recover before coming back last week at the Scottish Open and playing well. He will surely be the heavy crowd favourite as he looks to shake off the scar tissue that is very clearly beginning to accumulate. Will he manage the pressure and finally come through?

Scottie Scheffler has continued his historic season since the last major, grabbing a playoff win at the Travelers in late June. 6 wins and a major is a phenomenal year, but after a hugely disappointing performance at Pinehurst and a non-competitive top-10 at Valhalla, his major record in 2024 almost leaves one wanting, even despite claiming a Green Jacket. The last Open at Troon was won by one of the all-time great ballstrikers in Henrik Stenson, and Scottie himself is even better with his irons, so history would suggest he's due for a strong week. Will Scottie finish 2024 with a bang?

Finally, if Rory McIlroy is the crowd favourite, then perhaps Bob MacIntyre will be a close second. Coming in off of an incredible - and probably lucky - charge to win his country's national open last week, the Scot has good history at this major and the vibes with him are off the charts. He's currently listed at +2500 to win the Open on many sportsbooks - the same number as Jon Rahm, and a better number than Brooks Koepka. Who among us will bite the bullet and bet on the ~50th best player in the world at such a number?

Here are the remainder of the favourites, odds via bet365:

Scottie Scheffler +450
Rory McIlroy +750
Ludvig Aberg +1100
Xander Schauffele +1200
Bryson DeChambeau +1400
Collin Morikawa +1400
Tommy Fleetwood +2200
Jon Rahm +2500
Tyrell Hatton +2500
Viktor Hovland +2500
Robert MacIntyre +2500
Brooks Koepka +3500
Shane Lowry +3500

Anything that stands out?

I think Morikawa 2nd British is possible since he has been in the mix all year. But my pick would be Mcilory or Scheffler. Sleeper Fleetwood. Mega sleeper Aaron Rai who has ripped off 4th, 2nd and 7th in his last three tournaments and was a respectable T19 at US open, also a Brit.

Tiger in at T-140

Tiger's "I don't play unless I have a chance of winning" act is old. You could say Colin Montgomery had a point. Maybe he shouldn't retire but it's time to start treating him like Fred Couples or Bernhard Langer still playing the Masters. Old man with absolutely no chance to win but has earned the right to still play.

I personally don't even want to see him in Featured or Marquee groups anymore.

I adored Tiger all thru his storied career, but Monty is right........he is just embarrassing himself out there now & I don't want people remembering him for this.

People get all mad when he says stuff like this. He can’t physically play more than a few times a year. It is what it is. He doesn’t have anything resembling a normal routine for playing golf. He has all types of pre and post treatment that requires insane commitment and hours that aren’t feasible for a full season.

The coffin bunker on 8 claims both of the leaders as victims, and suddenly I'm awake.

Such a fascinating leaderboard. So many major losers - Horschel, Burns, Henley, Cantlay lurking. Even Xander hasn't fully turned in his loser card yet. Meanwhile, Scottie is hitting every green and missing every putt. It's right there for him...

Shoutout to the people here who know enough about golf to know who Dan Brown was before this... I am not one of them.

If Horschel goes on to win a reason will be that links bunker shot beside the green that could have gone horribly wrong.
