Patriots/NFL 2024 Off Season: Free Agency, Draft Part II

Goes to show they should have signed Cousins given they are still sitting on more than his cap hit... This draft is touted as a QB draft but I'm really wondering if any of these guys aside Caleb are legit top 10 picks on quality alone. Maye is a massive projet. JJ hasn't had to do shit in most games and padded stats against weak comps - against gragde A teams he was a shell of himself statistically (yes I "get it" they won on the ground but it does tell you they thought that was their best chance to win which is not an endorsement for a top 3QB...". Daniels just showed up in the draft year and who knows if it is a fluke or not. Penix, 2 shoulders, 2 knees in 4 years doesn't bode well, and Bo looks to be a good utility QB. As the Wendey's lady said in the day, "where's the beef!?". Wonder if they could do two trade downs, one to NYG for their first and a 2nd plus a 2nd next year. Then Vikings for the 11 and 23 and a 2nd next year. 2 firsts, 3 2nds. NYG can likely get their guy and Vikings JJ at 6. Get a OT and quality WR in the 1st, and then stack OT, TE, WR in the 2nd. Rattler in the 3rd if there.. if not just get some D and more offense and play out they year as a bridge year and either sign or trade for the QB of the future in the offseason / next year. Will be interesting Thursday to see the draft boards and how much hot air was pumpes into some of the QB balloons this year..

Btw hindsight is 20:20 but man did this guy nail Mac Jones:

I mean... tell me what "heavily involved in the decision making" means.

Because there are a million possibilities here, and a lot of the more realistic scenarios are ones in which I would consider Jonathan's involvement to be good and/or appropriate.
Without any actual info it's all guessing but what i take from that is the Patriots have an offer for number 3 that the front office like but the Krafts don't want to trade down.

They need to hire a GM and let them handle the football decision’s

This ownership is a wet blanket. They have had 24 years to succession plan and f*** it up while being the ones to pull the plug on Bill. Un friggin real and aside the Rooney rule on the GM (which is a copout anyway) absolutely no excuse.

We have a Coach and "acting" GM (who is really a head scout in function) who neither really know/can explain what their span of control is, a "collaborative" management structure with a black box once it gets to ownership and rich kids stuff, and mixed messages since the announcement of the new coach on spending, priorities, culture and goals.

It is dysfunction junction like back in the MOC/Jacobs/Sinden dark days of the B's. Kraft hired football guys to make the football decisions, and it got him 6 SB's.... Now he is reverting to wanting to be "the guy" with his dipshit offspring and prove something that will never play out. It's super bad mgmt and anyone that has worked in any company or org knows that it doesn't work that way.

This isn't an indirect excuse of BB or the bad GM facet of his role the past 4-5 years... It was time long ago. Now Bob is showing he's even a bigger problem than Bill with his assinine meddling and inability to understand the difference between CEO and Chairman. What a cluster....

There's so much wiggle room in the term "heavily involved".

Is he moving players up and down the board based on his preferences?

Is he using his decades of business experience to help Wolf negotiate the best deal possible?

Is he providing philosophical guidance?

Is he making the final decision on whether or not the team pulls the trigger?

"Heavily involved" doesn't answer any of those questions.

Penix's medical concern me too much.
To me it’s his only red flag, and even with that he’s been healthy recently

He doesn’t really run much anymore so I’m less worried about him taking hits and breaking

Plus you have Onwenu protecting his blind side with him being a lefty which is nice

If we trade out, I'd consider it if he's still there but those injuries are very worrisome. Reminds me of Lance.

Lance didn’t have the injuries until after he got drafted iirc- his biggest problem was lack of competition in college anyway and we don’t have that question with Penix

Based on the tweet, it certainly implies it’s in regards to football matters.

I don’t want him anywhere near the draft or giving his input.

Nope... sorry.

Unless you've got someone running your franchise who's earned the benefit of the doubt, you can't expect any ownership group to not provide input into a possible franchise-altering negotiation.

Maybe they need to spend some money and bring someone in then, because negotiating the business side and making draft/franchise altering decisions shouldn’t be made by someone who’s never done it.

Lot's of negativity here and you guys may be right. I'm just sitting on the sidelines here waiting to see what unfolds at the draft. I'd like to believe that the decision making falls on Wolf, Mayo and the scouts but it's not totally unusual for the owner(s) to weigh in. My only complaint in this thread is that we keep crapping on the Krafts for the performance over the last few seasons. I get we want to be competitive again but, like it or not, the Krafts helped to put a successful organization on the field for 6 Super Bowl victories. While the last few years have been tough to watch, most of the blame goes to ownership (Krafts) and coaching (Bill and his choice of assistants). To blame one and not the other is disingenuous and shortsighted.

Ownership can provide input. What the concern should be for us as fans is them forcing a decision on the front office. Picking a qb at 3 financially is the best choice for ownership. You'll sell more tickets, jerseys and add a level of excitement to the fanbase, while on the otherwise, trading the pick is punting on the season. Robert is already on record saying he wants a top rate young quaterback and i would think you can add really in front of wants when he's not in front of a microphone.

Eliot Wolf has no job security and very little power to go against them because the Krafts' decided not to name a gm in the most important off-season for the team in years. Even if it's unanimous from Wolf to the scouts that they don't think the qbs on the board are worth the 3rd pick and the value is in trading it for a haul, Kraft has made sure he has almost all of the power for the decision.

I’ve been a Kraft fan, but since he fired Bill he’s acted like a knob. He’s quick to put all the blame on Bill for anything and everything while taking none of it.

I know we don't want to admit it but Bill always wanted the keys to the car. Kraft let him have the keys for his entire time with the organization and he drove well for a number of years. Then he got too old and crashed the car a bunch over the past few seasons. Needed to take the keys away. They are both at fault and I really don't care who's pointing the finger at who. The egos are so big that it's time to move on. Bill's time was done, it's not the first time it's happened to an all-time great.
