I don't agree though in a RATE the draft perspective that if our 2 1st rounders work, it's fine anyway. It depends what kind of exercice you play. YES, based on history, the sooner you pick, the best your players are. And the sooner they are picked, the more chances they are to succeed. Hence, a top 5 pick in the 1st round is on another stratosphere than a 7th rounder. And it makes perfect sense.
BUT....once you did draft those insane 2 1st rounders....is that a reason to be fine with a subpar 2nd day? WAIT NOW....I,m not saying they did that 'cause most players...we know nothing about. BUT based on value and what was available.....I will say that they did. Everybody North American we picked was known. Every North American Prospect was ranked from CSS. Vecvanags, Khanin and Bergqvist were not. Did we discover them? Or were just never good to begin with? Stay tuned...4 years. But based on my and public listings...we could have done better. Again, mind you, for that EXERCISE only.
The year we were so hot on that exercice was 2012. Collberg, Thrower, Bozon, Vail, Hudon....that was just wow. That was almost A+ for day 2. With the few choices we had, 2006 was insane for day 2. Maxwell, Carle, White...I mean some lists had Maxwell and White in their 1st round! Carle high 2nd round. 2018? My god....a day 2 dream. It started bad though with the unknown Romanov...but then, so many homeruns Olofsson, Hillis, McShane, Fonstad.......A festival of hits!
I guess..no need to remind anybody what happened? The insane picks were forgotten. Romanov got us Dach and so on.
So it's a fun exercice to do. Sometimes it works, often it does not. Right now, I still don,t expect a lot of day 2. Though, really intrigued and will follow closely the guys that have the possibility to have the highest ceilings, Sawyer, Koivu and Merrill. The others for me have a low ceiling though, a guy like Thorpe could easily be a AHL fixture...while in the end Merrill might end up a....fixture. We will see!
