Outside the 2nd round I think the picks have all been at very worst justifiable and some that are pretty interesting.

Which is a bit scary. Because that would on some level indicate that individual scouts are suggesting the later guys who have upside and something about them... while the top 2 rounds were more FO picks.

They’re still obsessed with Vegas’ blue line from last year. Their takeaway is the size but mine is that pretty much all the defensemen could legitimately make plays with the puck at at least an adequate level.

Even McNabb who’s probably liked for his size & physicality amongst NHL front offices has actually been an analytic darling for mos for his career because he can actually make plays with the puck. Even at the lower levels he was skilled defensemen that produced offensively every step of the way before transitioning into a lesser more defensive role in the NHL.

It's the same people learning the same wrong lessons from the CBJ-TB series. Tampa's D got forechecked into oblivion. Some players can combat those forecheck issues with size, but there are other ways to do it too. You've got to be able to leverage whatever you have into moving the puck under pressure.

Do the Flyers trade up in the mid-late rounds more than any team under Flahr? They trade down early where tiers really can separate. And constantly trade up in the mess of the draft for Their Guy. Nothing says “smartest team” like that.
