I never thought he was overrated per se, I just didn't think Anaheim (or Columbus) should pick him over Carlsson or Fantilli. Always felt like Smith was in the next tier below them.

Sure. But it's still not an informed opinion. It's the same argument everyone used against Matthew Tkachuk while ignoring everyone who had actually watched him play for 2+ years and tried to tell them how skilled and effective he was.

Smith isn't infallible by any means, but guys with his skill and IQ are easy top 4 caliber picks.
