2024 DRAFT 9th Overall Zayne Parekh

1+2 today, 99 pts in 56, 24 pts in his last 10 games...

Come on hot dog- you need 2 pts to beat Ryan Ellis (100 pts in 58 games).

Why wasn't this guy called up and play for Juniors again?
Once he's sent down he can't be brought back up until the seasons over. Next year we should absolutely give him 10 games to try and if he's not ready keep his rights and loan him to Europe

My understanding is he's not eligible to be loaned to europe... the only way he could is by going to teh KHL and getting his contract with the Flames suspended since they don't have a transfer agreement

How did Valimaki get loaned? Was it AHL transfer agreement (which Parekh wouldn't have)?

Valimaki is a late birthday. Players born between Sept 16 and Dec 31 turn 20 in their draft+2 seasons, thus by CHL rules are overage in that year and AHL eligible.

It's the same thing with Honzek and Brzustewicz, had they been born in August rather than November, they would have had to play in the CHL this season. It's teh same rerason they were not eligible for the WJC this year too.

It gets confusing because between the NHL and CHL they use 3 different dates. Date for teh draft is 18 by Sept 15, but free agency uses a players age as of July 1 and the CHL uses calendar years.

I thought it was the 9 game rule but that seems to just be for ELC starting. Regardless, I'm pretty confident he's a full time member of the team next year

Yeah 9 games is to start teh ELC in a slide year and 40 (I think) for it to be an accrued season towards free agency. Players drafted out of the CHL are locked in until they complete their 19 year old CHL season, with teh exception of the NHL... or if they have played 4 seasons in teh CHL, then they can leave early and play elsewhere.

"Only" 1 point in 7:4 win last night. 100 pts in 57 games, he beats Ryan Ellis there (he did 100 in 58 games).

Come on hot dog, more points over the weekend in this Bobby Orr territory- just unravel that machine gun on Saturday.

We'll see how it goes. Saginaw's schedule gets pretty tough for the next week. Get Brantford on Saturday who's in a fight for 1st in the eastern conference. Then the monsters that are London on the road. Followed by division leading Windsor on the 15th. Last week of the season is fairly easy with 1 last game against the Soo and 2 against Flint. Saginaw might have their seeding locked in by those last 2 games. Might let him rest before the playoffs.

What if the plan is to let Zayne play the full season next year, and let him/us experience the growing pains while we aim for a McKenna lottery ticket?

I think they have pencilled him to be on the roster the full year but only getting into 1/2 to 2/3s of the games, similar to Leo Carlsson's rookie year in Anaheim

Its going to be weird for these younger high draft picks going forward as the teams are going to be reluctant to sign them at 18 if they can't play AHL in the D+2 season as it shuts the door to the NCAA route and locks them into either making the roster or going to back to Junior.

The AHL needs a CHL rule (but the opposite) where you can have 1 or 2 underage players (CHL has 2 overagers) on a team. There wouldn't be many anyway, but it would help guys like Parekh who are way too good for the CHL and need to play up a level without getting demolished in the NHL.

Because as it stands I don't think he's NHL ready and I don't think being thrown to the wolves will help him next year. He can't shine offensively if he's always stuck in the d-zone. We don't have the players to help him back there or shelter him. I really like Bahl, but don't think he's good enough to carry Zayne defensively, same with Weegar.

If the plan is for Zayne to play for the Flames next season they need to go out and final a Tanev level guy, all defense. Bahl isn't quite there yet.

Leo Carlson missed time because of the injury when Weegar lost an edge and fell on him

Exceptional status for CHL to AHL? 100% agree. Korchinski needed it too

As for carrying Zayne defensively, his own defensive game is criminally underrated for starters but if Weegar can't carry him then no one in the league can and we might as well call him a bust now.

I think he has an NHL spot to lose because there’s virtually no benefit to sending him back to the CHL. I think he’d really need to stink it up in training camp for that to change

Play him full time PP and OT minutes, then 3rd pairing 5 on 5, sit him in press box for about 15 games, still better development that returning to pointless junior season other would love to see him at the World Juniors

He's just as highly touted, if not more than Lane Hutson was coming in. If he makes the team next year he will only be entering the league 1 year younger than Hutson who has clearly had major success. I think he will steal the QB role on 1st PP unit before December and be playing consistently in the top 4. This team so desperately needs help offensively and he is an offensive catalyst.

Zero chance he’d play OT. Everything else you described is sheltered minutes, OT is the exact opposite. Only defenseman on the ice against players top players and games are decided on who makes the first mistake. Thats a recipe for him making mistakes and beginning to play cautious. Think the rest of your description is pretty accurate for the usage we will see.
I'm curious, if the Sens had picked Parekh and the Kraken sticked with Catton, would the Flames have went with Yakemchuk, Dickinson, or someone else?
Going off the rest of our draft you’d have to assume it’d be Buium. He has the best offensive profile after Parekh, and our draft philosophy seemed to be “take high end producers and hope they can figure out how to make it translate”.

His game actively defending is under rated, especially against the rush. He is gonna struggle against NHLers in corners and net front until he just keeps adding strength, but I don’t think that’ll be his biggest problem.

I think it can be a misnomer, but where he is gonna struggle pretty bad against NHLers ”defensively” is on the offensive blue line for his first few seasons. He is an absolute magician in the OHL on the blue line, but the biggest gap between the CHL to AHL, and AHL to NHL, is the time you get to make decisions. His partner is going to go grey from the stress of all the odd man rushes they face his first couple years while he learns what does and doesn’t work in the pros.
