Teams have been doing that for years, you take the safety to make sure the opponent doesn't block the kick and get a TD making it a 1 score game where they can potentially get an onside kick with a chance to tie or win

The Lions scored with 18 seconds left got the onside and hit a hail mary to tie it



The Chiefs 4th down started with 15 seconds left after a time out, it Houston blocks the punt for a TD, it is feasible for them to get the onside kick with 5-7 seconds left, throw a hail mary and win, or even with one time out, maybe get into field goal range to tie. Unlikely sure, but not impossible

You take the safety which happens with 11 seconds remaining after the punter wastes a little time running around, kick it away and Houston likely gets the ball around the 30-35 yd line needing 2 scores, That is impossible
