How the hell does a guy taken ninth overall last year, who almost made an NHL roster, and is now putting up over a PPG in the WHL not even make camp?

That’s ridiculous. Guys like Beau Akey and Cam Allen over Yakemchuk and Parekh?

Now I hope Canada gets clowned by the Americans.

All their right side guys are 2023 draftees except Brunicke.

Clearly they want a more experienced squad but this is just silly.

What role does he fill in a 2 week tournament?

He's not fleet of foot or strong defensively

Seems they are going to be using Dickinson and Molendyck as their offensive guys.

And seems like they are going to use their extra slot for the 17 year old who is possibly going 1st overall

In a 2 week tournament, there isn't much room for a guy who was drafted as a project

Take the most talented players. That’s what you do for two week tournaments. At least get them all to camp.

Plus, you can have more than two defenseman who generate offense, and having more physicality is not a bad thing.

And are Cameron Allen and Beau Akey not projects? They have polished games? Please. These guys are all 18 and 19 year olds. They’re all projects.

And Matthew Schaefer has as good a chance of dropping out of the top 10 by the draft as he does going first overall. Probably better.

He's younger by the better part of a year but there's still seniority at play.
All born 2005

Yakemchuk - 209 games CHL
Allen - - 176 games CHL
Akey - 163 games CHL
Bonk - 159 games CHL
Gibson - 184 games CHL

Born 2006
Brunicke - 125 games CHL

If they were looking for age or senority, Yak has every single guy beat by close to a season of CHL hockey

They aren't projects like Yak, no. They definitely aren't as good prospects as Yak, but that doesn't much matter in a 2 week lomng tournament

Yak was drafted so high because of what he can become when he develops

Schaefer has zero chance of dropping out of the top 10

They’re all projects at the NHL level. Yak is just a project with very high upside. Some of those other guys have minimal upside.

But they’re all established junior players.

If a junior team was picking a roster for the Memorial Cup tournament, would anyone take Akey over Yakemchuk? Not a chance.

He’s not a project when playing against junior players, anymore than anyone else on that team. This is a team and tournament filled with junior players.

But anyway, Hockey Canada hubris again. Like I said, I hope the Americans crush them on home soil. I expect the Americans will take their most talented kids.

I would imagne some teams would for sure, Barrie being one of them

The things he needs to develop with age and time, skating and defense, are things things that the team is looking for now. He doesn't provide either, and if they don't plan on using him in a top 2 offensive role, there really isn't room for him. He absolutely could be better offensivey and positive offensively for the team, and the team may regret it. But looking at it, the decision makes sense

Dickinson, Price Molendyck as offensive guys. 3 defensive guys, and Schaefer as the 7th

Schaefer looks to have taken Yak/Parekh's spot as the extra offender

can we call him up for 9 games until Zub is healthy?
Nope, and wouldn't be wise

If they aren't using him on the PP, it doesn't make much sense to bring him. Seems they made the decision to have guys they will rely on at all situations to lead their PP.

He hasn't been scoring much at ES, but has been on fire on the PP. 14PP points to 9ES points. Compare that to someone like Price who has 24 ES points, or even Akey who has 12ES points.

They certainly aren't beinging him for his skating or D.

May come back to haunt them, but it makes sense looking at it from a roster construction point of view

Sucks about this, Canada with some real head-scratching moves as usual. On the plus side, this makes me feel a little bit better since I didn't get any tickets this year considering people are looking for $200 for a 1 ticket against latvia lmao

Their “roster construction” POV is what got them Fraser Minten as captain and a 5th place finish last year.

It’d be one thing if Yakemchuk was the only snub to camp (not even the team, but camp!). But they also left off Misa, Parekh, Sennecke, Iginla, etc.

They’re getting clowned on Twitter, and rightfully so.

Lots of people are also pointing out that Akey plays the same high risk game as Parekh or Yak… just without the offensive ability. And he got invited!

Can the Sens recall him? Play him as the 7D for the rest of the season - burn a year of his ELC. He'll learn more in the NHL this year than the WHL. Can always move back and forth to the AHL next year.

Understandable, they get clowned on twitter every year, including all the ones they win. Twitter isn't exactly a melting pot of well thought out process.

I wouldn't have taken Akey either, but it's not as though he hasn't been producing as well as Yak this year at ES, in fact he's outproducing him at ES which is the role they'd be competing for. As well as being an extremely strong skater.

The minute the decided they weren't using Yak/Parekh on their PP, the decsion was essentailly made. For better or for worse.

Thought Yakemchuk's physicality and being right-handed would help him make the team.

Team Canada seems to take performances at their summer camp and at lower levels (U18, Hlinka, etc...) very seriously.

Yak wasn't very good at the Summer Showcase, but you'd think almost making an NHL team out of camp would mean more.

Really disappointing the fans won't be able to see Yakemchuk play on home ice. Big kick in the nuts there from Dave Cameron.

We’re talking about an invite to camp here though, not the final team.

What happens if they get to camp and Dickinson struggles to build chemistry as QB of unit one?

Competition is good. Guess not in this selection process.

If they had chosen just one of Parekh/Yak, I would’ve understood. But to leave both off of the camp roster, in favor of Akey, Allen, etc?

Dumb dumb.

So much talent left off in favor of “roles”. This tournament isn’t a 7 game series where you grind the other team down. It’s single game elimination where you have to score.

Based on how this roster is shaping up, we’ll see a similar result to last year.

Yakemchuk isn’t even the biggest snub. I won’t start on the forwards.

Team Canada looks to really have valued the 2 way D that can skate and defend over any offensive specialists.
I have no issues with who they have on their list.
I was surprised both Yakemchuk and Parekh were not in the group of 10 but I can understand it.
I think they will have very good ability to defend, break the puck out, lead the rush, join the rush and have quaility play in the ozone.
The Schaeffer kid is that same mold and is a shining star for Canada U18.

It especially sucks for Yakemchuk that he is in his last year of eligibility and it sucks Sens fans won't get to see him at the event in their back yard. I'm sure leaving him off was not an easy decision.
