Prospect Info: 2024 2nd Overall - Artyom Levshunov

I didn't think Korchinski was a reach or off the board. I preferred Mintyukov but they were comparable prospects. And while some people were really high on Moore, there were questions about his finishing and overall puck skills. I wanted them to take Perreault but with KD's speed fetish, we knew that Moore was going to be the pick if he was there. Overall, I have disagreed with more of KD's 1st round picks than I agreed with. Besides Bedard and Nazar, I would have made all different picks. But they spend hours and hours and hours of research on the picks and I just listen to some podcasts and read some articles so what do I know?

It’s funny you mention Mintyukov because he’s had a miserable season this year. Benched a whole bunch and everything.

What I’ve learned more than anything is scouts get it wrong all the time, fans get it wrong all the time, and there’s plenty of high scoring players in juniors that don’t translate to the NHL. So I try not to judge prospects this early or compare to other ones as trajectories can be weird.

Cronin has sucked all the offensive creativity out of that team.
 
I think the Gajan pick is easily the worst pick they’ve made. Considering the options available, how they’ve all trended, and how Gajan has also trended. Beyond that I felt like picks like Felcman and Misiak were pretty bad, even in the moment.

Levshunov I don’t categorize as a bad pick in this moment.. way too early to be saying that.

levshunov has been having a great rookie ahl season from the box scores. 12th in rookie d scoring, but also the only 2005 birth year in that group. the shots are also encouraging. he is currently on pace for 2.875 shots per game, which would be the highest rate by any ahl rookie d shots leader since 2008-09 (yannick weber, 2.955 sog/gp). he's getting shots like a forward (he leads all ahl rookies in shots, forwards included). bodes well if he can keep steadily raising his offensive game while learning to play the defensive side of the puck at higher levels.

Is the AHL not a better league than the KHL? It’s tough to translate what Demidov is doing over there because who knows what he gets away with there that he won’t be getting away with here. Even Bedard apparently struggles with that.

i tend to think the difference is exaggerated. the ahl is probably a somewhat better league, but there are translatability questions with both players if there are for either. levshunov is having a solid but not overwhelming rookie season in the relatively stronger league while demidov is having an outstanding rookie season in the comparatively weaker league.

Despite the hype, Demidov is far from perfect. He needs to work on his top speed like Bedard and while he has an accurate shot, I wouldn't call it particularly deceptive or wicked.

I was a Gajan fan and supporter of that pick but it sure looks bad rn.

They pretty much threw away their entire draft after Bedard/Moore in 2023. Kantserov is the only pick that looks good rn.

Humor me on some semantics here for a second. When people say they don’t see a projected 1D in Levshunov, what is a 1D exactly? The top defensemen on the teams? A top 32 D in the league? A top 10-15 D that impacts the game a certain way?

I have Levshunov way up there with a 1D projection (hawks future top defensemen and top 20 in league) but not sure what I’m arguing against.

Btw Levshunov 1G 3A in last 5 games since his Belarusian bro came over.

It's different for everybody. For me, it's being amongst the top 32 best defenders in the league, particularly over a handful of years.

People generally seem to be cautious about calling prospects future 1Ds. The prospects, leading into a draft, who are called future 1Ds generally go first overall (Dahlin, Power, maybe Schaefer). If you go 2nd (or 3rd or 4th, etc) and have a pretty solid resume, you're simply labeled having "top pairing potential" until you show that you're more or less than that years after being drafted.

Lev can take the AHL by storm next season and I don't know that he'd be considered a future #1D by the 'experts'. He'd need to show that in the NHL.

I mean i think 50+ points, all situations, 25+ minutes a game and can play against the best the opposition has to offer and routinely win those matchups. Consistent, disciplined and predictable, unlike Jones lol

Obviously if youre extremely prolific offensively it can make up from some less dominant defensive play (Karlsson, Makar recently) and vice versa like a Slavin, prime Marc-edouard Vlasic.

I think that makes sense. I for sure see Levshunov as a 50 point 25 minute guy but he's going to make some dumb decisions sometimes. That comes with the way he plays as a rover type. I also think it's funny that he has a lot of Seth Jones qualities. But that is such a brutal comp to make but I mean like, young borderline #1 pick Seth Jones in D and D+1/2/3 years. I mean... if we rewound the clock and played Seth Jones career 100 times I bet the way his career has panned out is like a bottom 5 result. He was an athletic freak monster 4 way skater like Levshunov... just didn't go as well as it could've for him.

Poor Seth got brought in to Nashville in his D+1 to play 5D for three years. Then got shipped to NHL purgatory and played pretty amazing for those CBJ teams... anyway. This isn't a Seth Jones thread but I don't think a Seth Jones D+1 comp is the insult people make it out to be.

I didn't like the Gajan pick because goalie but Marcel Marcel even for a fifth what the f***? Like we drafted a guy with the upside of face puncher in 2023?
 
I think Lev has the physical talent to be a #1 Dmen, but I just get Seth Jones vibes off him with the mental side of the game. I also don't see the edge that Keith and Seebs had. They might not of been Chelios, Manson or even Steve Smith type of nasty but they were more than willing to go over the line when needed. I think that you need that edge from more than just your role players in the playoffs. That said, I hope he does develop into a force on the ice, because he's a key piece in our rebuild.

Levshunov is capable of that. The defensive part is his biggest hurdle but he has all the talent to be that guy.

50 points is absolutely attainable for him.
